|
|
I am starting a 12 month contract in a Korean English school sometime in mid-Feb' and I am in the process of booking a return ticket to Seoul, but here is the paradox.
A 12 month airline ticket with Singapore airlines is good for just that - 12 months. The school director seems to think it is possible to extend a return date by a week or two [for a small fee], but the airline and the travel agent say that this cannot be done. I am buying my ticket here [NZ] and my employer will reimburse me. How then, can I work my full 12 months and still return home on my original airline ticket? I plan to arrive in Seoul 5 or 6 days before my contract in a small town school begins. |

easy buy a one way ticket and get your employer to pay for the one way back at the end of the contract. You get reimbursed for the ticket so dont worry if it costs a couple of extra bucks for the one way. |

Do they mean it cannot be done period, or it cannot be done right now?
I went through this a while back with a different airline. After I came to Korea I was able to extend my departure date at a local office. Because of the system they were using, the airline couldn't accept bookings for flights more than 12 months away. |

If it's a 12 month open return ticket they can be re-validated before expiry. |

I flew with singapore airlines on my first time to korea from new zealand and got my ticket extended no problems. Try a different travel agent. My recuriter organised my tickets for me but there is a firm in dunedin called vip travel that extended my ticket and also organised extra luggage allowance. I don't know if this was because of the recuriter though |

I think I will.
I like the idea of buying 2 x one way tickets, but I think I need to arrive with a return ticket for immigration purposes. As Grotto pointed out, I am getting reimbursed so I shouldn't worry about it too much, but it is an odd condition [I think]. |

I too have extended my 12 month return ticket (from NZ, with Asiana). I signed on for another 6 months and my boss just rang the airline and got the date extended. It didn't cost him anything either. The last teacher was from Aus. and got his ticket extended a few weeks but it cost 25,000won, not a lot either way. |

I often travel on one-way tickets.. and have come into Korea numerous times on them. I've never been asked for a return ticket coming into Korea.
I have twice in my life in two other places. Going into Manila and Sao Paulo. Each time I just had to go to another ticket counter and buy a refundable ticket elsewhere. Once in the country, call the airline company back and cancel that refundable ticket that was suppose to take you out.
In short, travelling on one-way tickets aren't really a problem at all.
That being said, if you think you are going to go straight back home after your contract.. then it sounds like the others suggestions are best. |

Do you have your E-2 already? Do E-2's require a return ticket, too? I thought that was just for tourist visas.
In any event, I came to Korea on a one way ticket, with a tourist visa, with no trouble at all. I have a mulitple entry E-2 on which I have entered Korea 3 times in the past six months, no ticket out of Korea, and no one even batted an eye. |

I was in the unfortunate situation where my ticket was not extendable. So, I stayed about 364 days (or about that) in Korea. My first institute went bankrupt, and then my second institute had the flight ticket. I stayed at the second institute for 7 months, but they saved money by making me use the ticket. I was lucky to get a seat as the second institute organised a seat booking very late in my contract and i was in the waiting list for a week or two. When they realised the situation, they gave me the flight ticket like a hot potato. If I could not get a seat, they still would not accept responsibility.
Remember, get a seat ASAP if the ticket is open ended. |

I agree. That's what I have done each time I've worked in Korea. |
