|
|
I was thinking last night in the pub, whether it'd be better to only drink flavored soju all night in a bar, and to skip the beer/tequila/whiskey thing altogether.
It would save you a load of cash I'd reckon, plus, I heard that the hangover from the stuff isn't half as bad as long as you don't mix it (with other alcohol).
I'm really getting sick of the beer over here. Even though, I figured I'd be used to it by now. The hangover is completely out of proportion with the amount drunk (I think!).
Anyway, anybody tried it ? ... or would like to do it this weekend and we could compare notes ????
(maybe this thread just applies to alcoholics ... apologies to the other 8% of you out there ) |

Don't take any more advice from this person!
A couple nights drinking ONLY soju kettles at Poly's (the infamous Itaewon Hooker Hill Kettle House, not the hakwon) have proven otherwise. Oh yeah, and you lose your memories too; end up spending the rest of the week re-living scenes from Memento.

It's not a bad strategy to save money but many bars won't serve you soju in any format.
Some bars think they are too classy for soju you see.
Also, I've never noticed a soju hangover to be any lighter than any other drink. In fact, it's worse than most drinks.
The only drink which can be hammered and yet produces a fairly light hangover is good quality, single malt Scotch or Irish Single malt whisky. And they certainly aren't cheap in Korean bars.
The cheapest and funnest (yes...it is a word...) bar drinking you can do in Seoul is for a few friends to buy a bottle of Jose Cuervo at a Tequila bar somewhere like Hongdae. 45,000 won for a full bottle. At that price you can buy two!!! Don't worry if you can't finish it. They'll write your name on the bottle and put it behind the bar so you can polish it off next time you go. |

What a bunch of pantywaists. PANTYWAISTS!
Real men never:
-- flavour their soju with anything
-- drink "kettles"
-- go to Itaewon
-- know or care what the hell this stupid B***S*** "Polly Kettlehouse" is
-- worry about hangovers
My plumber is a real man. So is his dad. His dad, in fact, has only ever drunk water or soju his entire life. So I asked, "What about milk?" "No." "But what about fruit juice?" "No, just water or soju." "Well, what about bori-cha or makkoli?" No, and stop asking -- I told you, he's only ever drunk soju and water."
Now that's a real man. You guys are pantywaists. Admit it. |

From the title I thought this was going to be a wacky ESLers attempt to immitate the "Supersize Me" guy and drink only soju for a month and video the results ... no water, no juice, no beer, no fizzy soft drinks... only soju ... any takers??? |

Yeah... My plumber's dad. And, according to him, a whole bunch of older dudes from that generation & region (rural eastern part of what is now North Korea).
*EDIT*: Oops... didn't see the "no water" -- Please ignore above. |

Whoa-ho-ho-ho-HO!
Before questioning my soju consuming abilities, I think you need to find the "Soju Etiquette" tread and read my post re: "The Man Shot" (haha...)
And believe me when I say that I do not drink the flavored stuff, and that my forays into Polly's have been accompanied with all out chair-flinging GI melees that could hardly be considered "pantywaist". Hahaha.
Not to take anything away from the plumber's father. I'm sure he's great.
(No hostility- just defending my honor.... um.... hm.) |

Yes, that's a frighteningly accurate description. |

Did something like that one Saturday night, and by Tuesday afternoon I was feeling normal again. .
Not a good idea. |

("it quite bitter"? huh?)
Change the "can't" to "doesn't need to" and then change the "bitter" to "indifferent". (Oh yeah, and the "it" to "is"...)
You seem to have a fondness for the Ville, Osangrl, which I confess I once did as well, living within puking distance of Itaewon as I did. As for Polly's, I can show you the scar on my shin from that place that I've carried around since you were in training bras.
Chillin', oh man, my plumber's dad??! The guy's in his mid-70s, got a handshake like a vise, and when he and his friend -- this 80-something-year-old widower film director (not kidding) who lives down my street -- when those two get together down at the local soju house, the ajummas running the place know to call me... because it's always a madhouse.
They're both former ROK paramilitary scary-monster types, with an endless supply of stories from both the DMZ and 'Nam that will curl your hair and straighten it out again. If you came in with me, they'd arm-wrestle and soju-drink you under the table. That's what my money says, anyway. |

Sounds great- I love guys like that. And I'd bet against myself in any kind of arm wrestling match.
Maybe he'll do a Man Shot with me sometime, although I don't know if I've got the fortitude to do another...Haha. |

One of the most pleasant hangovers I ever had was from from drinking little else except 8 bottles shared with one friend, and a bowl of ahl tang on the table between us. (My Korean firends say it was the soup eten along with the shots that turned the tide in my favor.) Next morning we went to the sauna, then a walk in the country out to a temple ... just felt like a very mild buzz, very mellow and relaxed. My buddy didn't fare so well that morning, tho, go figure.
The worst hangover I ever had was a few months later with the same guy after sharing about 3 bottles over dinner, but then switching to saeng maekju and later cocktails. Major loss of muscle control well into late afternoon of the next day, and my friend had to make an emergency trip to the yakuk on my behalf. |
