When I first came here I would go to Burger King and you'd get these great solid plastic promotional beverage glasses with your whopper combo meal. I thought that was great. I could use a few glasses for my apartment. I'm tired of rewashing the same glass. It would be cooler if the glasses had a picture of Gandalf or the Millenium Falcon on it, but I figured in Korea a glass with just Burger King on it was cool enough for the locals to want to pay 4,800 won for a meal. Anyway, after my meal, I'd toss the cup in my backpack.
I began to notice this cup promotion was going on for several months with no sign of letting up and I seemed to be the only one taking my cup home. Koreans all seemed to leave theirs neatly stacked by the trash. Eventually I clued in. "Oh! Korea is big into recycling. These are not promotional cups! They're washed and reused."

Actually, Korea isn't that big into recycling. Ever walked along a street in Korea? The place is a cesspit - if it was that big into recycling you wouldn't see that much rubbish. Actually, after travelling to 17 countries, Korea is one of the dirtiest I have seen.
Of course Burger King is going to recycle, otherwise they look bad. But I don't think that Burger King reflects Koreans treatment of rubbish/recycling as a whole.
The law that says you have to separate food from other rubbish was just introduced recently. It took Koreans a long time to clue in on this grand idea.... |

A couple of months ago, while my wife and daughter were visiting the in-laws in Canada, the mother of the new family that had recently moved into our building came to my door bearing a plate of persimmons. I graciously accepted them, but she said she needed the plate back -- so I dumped the persimmons into a fruit bowl and, absentmindedly, instead of giving her back her plate, handed her the fruit bowl full of persimmons.
Embarrassing, yes, but it still doesn't top the time I went in to work sans pants and shirt. What can I say? It was a hot summer! But was my face ever red! I think the secretary liked it, though.

I should have spelled it out for some. The Korean fast food industry is big into recycling/reuse compared to North America. |
