To all you pyschology grads and those in the know:

Can anybody elucidate this concept through an account of an experience you've heard about.

As dark as it is, I've read that victims of sexual assault often try to 're-enact' their attack--put themselves or find themselves in situations--with another 'potential assailant' in the hope, held subsconsciously, that things will turn out different.

I ask cause I've got a friend who has just narrowly escaped repeated victimization in California. Thing frightens me to death, that sexual abuse desensitizes victims to danger signs, immobilizes them in the face of threat, and disables any chance they might otherwise have had of escaping.

Many times, victims try to reenact the vicitimization in hopes of regaining some control over the situation. It is not overly normal and not healthy (although not totally unhealthy), it is a way for the victim to try and change the situation. In situations involving a lot of emotional pain, reactions to the stressor are not always going to make sense to others. It is difficult to understand what is going through a persons mind, but for the most part it has to do with regaining control. Has anyone ever looked back on a situation and though "if only I had done this different...."
