What happens if you add more ram to a motherboard than it is supposed to handle? I"ve got a second pc that the motherboard is supposedly only able to handle 256, but I've got a couple of extra sticks that I could add to it... |

I really doubt it would fry it - the more likely failure would be that it wouldn't boot up, or would recognize 256 as 128 or something like that. If it was me, I'd take the marginal risk and try it. You could get lucky and have it work.
You might also look on the mainboard vendor's site for a firmware upgrade that might accomodate larger memory simms. |

You can find the vendors name on the board itself? I bought a pre-fab about four years ago and have no idea what vendor manufactured my board. |

Two clues about the manufacturer and model of the board:
1. It may be printed/screened on the board itself
2. Download Sisoft Sandra standard, a diagnostic program. Do a search for it. One of the components will tell you the board manufacturer and model, in most cases.
I think all of this is moot though- just pop the SIMMS in there, fire it up, and see if they work. If they do, great. If not, take them out.
And if things blow up, remember: my name is Bulsajo and I live in Canada. glad to help. |

In the times I've tried to do this, the extra memory doesn't get recognized (ie, only 128 MB of a 256MB stick is addressable, if at all). It didn't fry anything. You should be okay to try it, but I wonder how you got to the maximum amount of RAM and still have empty slots. |
