I wonder if anyone here has or is currently doing online teaching. I'm not talking about distance teaching from a classroom. Simply doing instrucition from the comfort of your own abode.
For example, if I were to start teaching online using a webcam, what kind of technology would I want to invest in, i.e. computer specs, internet speed, web space, online payment system, etc. What sort of equipment besides a computer, online access, cam and mic would I need?
Also, anyone have any online resources or books I should read that talk about this same subject?

Usually the employer will specify the miminums.. seems to vary.
Having taught online English through a company.. the better computer you have, the better all the way around.
Its real annoying and frustrating for everyone involved if you can't hear the student (which seemed to always be the #1 frustration). My company with engineers never quite seemed to figure out how to upgrade or fix that aspect. |

Well, actually Tiger, I didn't mention that I was specifically looking to start up my own operation from the comfort of my own home.
No boss, no contracts, just self-employment.
I'm sure I'd need webspace to advertise and an advertising budget.

I'm currently in the U.S. so, for starters, I'd want to find about 8-12 students 3 hours per week from North and South America. Therefore, I would do students in the evenings in or around the same time zone. I do speak Spanish so their's a leg-in right there.
I'm also a TESOL grad student with experience in the U.S. and Korea so that would help money-wise.
Any help with technology information would be appreciated. I'm trying to find this information as I will be writing a grant for a class assignment. |

I had plans to do that when I got back. Two hurdles that came up, doing it from overseas, were that I couldn't easily email students to get them on board. Hanmail kept bouncing my emails. The other was in money transfer. I was hoping to use Paypal or something similar, but the Korean site isn't working yet to my knowledge.
Those were probably not insurmountable problems, but they were enough to delay me for a bit. I also spent quite a while designing a website which, upon completion, the kgf finally voiced her dislike of it, saying it was "not looking Korean enough". (My site had a brown colour scheme and apparently all Korean sites should be 'white'). I considered the prospect of redesigning it with bobbly-headed cartoon animals going ! and ! a lot but at that point, I just put it on the backburner and got into a local publishing project which has kept me insanely busy on its own, for the last 7 months.
I'd think about getting back to it once I found the time but more than likely I will just let the domain name lapse and count my losses. |

I plan to focus on the North and South America market so Paypal shouldn't be a problem.
Still not sure what kind of computer specs I'd be needing.
I'm looking at connecting a Handycam to my computer and then finding some sort of interface software besides Yahoo! messenger or Netmeeting that would be more professional.
Any ideas? |
