Hey. My mother and aunt are coming for a week Feb 6th-12th. I'm trying to make a list of places I should take them. I haven't really seen much here myself so looking for some advice. What places would you recommend? Seoul and Daejeon area mostly, but feel free to list anywheres!

daejon? are you nuts? yuck.
You can spend 2 days easily checking out seoul highlights.
Head to Gwangju and check out that boring temple everyone raves about.
head to the east coast, not busy this time of year... check out sokcho and Seoraksan... and boom.
done. |

| Gyeongju and Seorak, I would suggest. The first isn't far from Busan and the second is a few hours from Seoul. Jiri-san is also good but a bit out of area for you. |

I second the nomination for Gyeongju. Soooo incredible: the burial mounds, the Tripitaka Koreana (which took my breath away--but I love libraries), Seokkulam Grotto, Bulguksa Temple.
With a week's visit, I'd see it and Seoul, where I'd make a point of seeing the Dongdaemun Markets at night, the view from Namsan, and.... |

| you've got to do the DMZ- it's unique- there are also ice fishing festivals happening in a couple of places which could be interesting |

Thanks for the ideas everyone. The reason I said Daejeon was because I live in Daejeon but I'm realizing there aren't many exciting places to see here. Has anyone been to Yusong Hot Springs? And what markets are the best to go to in Seoul if you were only going to go to 1 or 2?
Thanks again |

Tripitaka Koreana is in Haeinsa, and so worth the visit- also the village, where some of the restaurants serve great mountain food. |

Heaps of places to go
BTW...the traffic on Seollal will be shockingly bad for a couple of days, like 12 hours for a Seoul to Busan run so keep that in mind.
Places to see;
Seoul(obviously)
DMZ(thought at the moment I've heard tours have stopped)
Gyeongju (Pretty awesome if you like old stuff plus one of the only places in Korea set up to ride a bike)
Heainsa (probably the prestiest temple in Korea but a little glum at the moment with the season)
Busan(has its charms)
Jeju(I rate it, worth going)
South Coast Islands - Koje, Namhae are pretty nice.
Seoroksan - though now it may be a little snowy |

Kyongju. One can linger there and it's the real thing. If one's into thousand year old, magnificent buddhist art in stone in a beautiful, natural setting. Just chill out and stay there for days, soaking it in, poking around.
Before or after Namdemun/Tongdaemun markets in Seoul, and that hectic Seoul stuff, including the palaces. |

i'm pretty sure you can get bus tours of the andong area, and if you can - check out bukseoksa temple - by far the most beautiful place i've seen in korea. it's about 2.5 hours from seoul.
though bulguksa in gyeongju rivals it, it's one of those places that is right out of a movie and a good memory for your mom and aunt to bring home.
hahoaemaeul - hahoae village - is also a must-see.
then take them into andong to eat salted mackerel (go din ah - i don't have hangeul on my computer, but find the restaurants with the big mackerels on the storefront).
if they're not that adventurous, do gyeongju. it's pretty awesome. take the KTX and transfer at daegu. |
