How do I get my windows to open the same way each time?
I don't know if it's CCleaner or AdAware or what, but the settings for my windows always change. I open up my music folder which was in list form and sized smaller to the corner of my desktop yesterday, and it's all of a sudden in icons and in the middle of the screen in big size. I change it back, and tomorrow it's changed again.
Also I can't seem to get rid of queer folders such as Myebooks and mypictures and mymusic. I have my own folders for these purposes. They just keep coming back. |

You can deal with all of these problems with the UItweak utility which came with SP2 and can be found in the control panel. If it's not there, you may need to go to the Administrative tools and command it to show all of your option areas in the control panel. You could also get a program called Tune-Up Utilities 2005 which is an excellent tweak program with a lot of other options as well. Tune-Up takes care of this problem in it's "folders" section.
With cCleaner, you should also make sure that the 'advanced' options are turned off, this is likely where your problems are originating if it is not a configuration problem. |

Before I needed my computer cleaned up last summer I never had a problem.
Everything was loaded again in September, and the problem started then. My computer is clean now, just the damn windows reset at random.
I ruled out Ad Aware or Spybot or CCleaner or anything, because the reset happens at random. Maybe for a week they are fine. It seems to act up when I download or remove programs. Today I was fooling around with things, and they reset several times. |

Does this look like a safe solution? My acquired wisdom suggests the registry is dangerous territory.

By default, Windows XP remembers the last 400 folder settings. After 400, it's supposed to discard the oldest settings, so that it always remembers the most recent 400. Navigate to the Registry key HKEY_ CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ ShellNoRoam. If present, repeat the earlier deletions. That should cure Windows XP's faulty memory. The OS will "forget" all existing folder settings, but from this point onward, it should remember them correctly. |
