Hey all,

This is just something I have been kicking around.....my attempt at philosophy.

Being in Korea, for almost a year and a half now, I went form the grueling 48 working horus a week 9-7 to a leisurely schdule of studying Korean from 10-12, and teaching here and there just to get by. I suppose I could teach more, but ... why.. hehe....

I find the lesss I have to do, the less I feel motivated to do more... does that make sense...? My first year, I had so much to do, that all I did was grind it out all day, and play vids at night. Drink on weekends etc....but yet I still felt like I wanted to do more. Now that I can I dont.

These days I dont have that much to do in my spare time, with people working, and find I even get to the gym less now than I did when I was really busy. Might be the conveniece thing.

I have all these projects I keep meaning to get around to but never seem to.

Have I lost it? Or maybe just cabin fever?

That's a good question. Very chicken or egg.

I think if you are perpetually bored, you might become depressed, and that would seep into your daily life (washing dishes, washing clothes, washing yourself) and to the impartial observer you might appear lazy.

Something creative! Creative writing perhaps. Start a novel with the line, 'Herb sat on the can cracking peanuts,....'. Suddenly realize, with the shame of instant recognition, you are the protagonist, Herb! Who is flatulent, with flabby thighs, and....adrift......then mount the stairmaster!

Interesting.

But some of us do more, when we have more time.

When I've been overloaded with work, I tend to streamline my focus into only two or three directions as a way of managing. I did so as a journalist and boyfriend. But, when my workload has lightened (ESLing in Korea) I find myself engaged in over a dozen projects, having to limit myself. It's almost like I'm trying to match the previous level of intensity and flurry of activity.

It could be a matter of personality.

I don't get bored. I mean, at least, I don't use the word "boring" nor get upset when something is slow or unengaging.

I often wonder why some people often complain about boring things: Simply change what you are doing then, I sometimes think, or start thinking about something interesting! I can seem inactive yet be very engaged with the world around me, watching birds for hours, mesmerized by clouds at a bus stop.

Maybe it depends on one's engagement with one's own imagination and ponderings during slow moments. But perhaps some are just too lazy for that! Surprised

Boredom generates laziness?

Or the other way around: lazy people become bored when inactive.

Do something!

boredness breeds depression, anxiety, and mental instability.

When I get bored, I either draw comics or start posting a lot on messageboards...

I guess you're right. Wink

Sometimes I think boredom has become one of the biggest problems in the world.

With all the technology options, TV, computer, music, more free time for many people, we are still bored, and constantly seeking entertainment. It seems the more developed countries suffer more from boredom than the poorer ones. It seems the kids these days are more easily bored than in the past. More avenues of entertainment, but still more boredom. The latest movie or computer game barely satisfies any more. When I was a kid I wasn't bored that much as long as I was playing sports or games, or watching TV or reading. But now I get bored a lot!

Wow,

Clouds at a bus stop.

That's hell of a good advice.

In Korea one could do far worse things with one's leisure time.
