First year in Inchon, I was living with X. X was famous in Inchon and some of you may know of him. A totally nice guy but with a penchance for the strange and exotic. The last I heard he was back in Australia after nearly getting busted for something or rather.

X would receieve his 1.8 million won and 10 days later there was nothing left. He had bottles of JB and Absolut 'littered' in bars all over Inchon and Puchon. He would be out drinking every night and knew every Kim in Inchon. He considered himself a 'ladies man' and by all accounts he was. If he didn't pick up at one of his regular haunts, he would finish the night in the 'Yellow House' in DongIncheon blowing his money on prostitutes.

He would take his 'harem of omnis' shopping and give them expensive gifts from Lotte and Hyundai. By day 10 he would ask the director to give him a cash advance and he always obliged. He would also hit up the other teachers for loans.

He would turn up to his morning shift totally hungover and once passed out on the staffroom floor. In those days, Wonderland had theme rooms and one was called the 'bedroom'. He would often instruct his kindergarten students to color and he would proceed to lock the door. He would turn off the lights and 'take 20' on the bed which was under the camera. He once woke up and the the classroom was destroyed as his students had decided to color the walls instead.

X also had a fondness for exotic pets; iguanas, seashells that moved etc He was proud of boasting that he knew all of the names of the animal kingdom, but I didn't doubt him. He acquired this fascinating knowledge as he used to work in a petshop in Australia. He bought a spider monkey from Dongdaemun for 1.2 million won. He called it Cortez. By day he would let the monkey 'roam' in the apartment. It was truely disturbing in terms of hygeine. However, there was a sharp decline in his love life that coincided with the monkeys arrival.

I left X when he was in the middle of his contract. By that time he owed almost every teacher $ in the hagwon. By that time he was almost a broken man. I heard that he had to get a refund for the monkey at Dongadaemun. The ajumma ripped him off and he lost half of his money.

I often wonder about that monkeys whereabouts? Maybe its still back in Dongdaemun, or maybe it got a gig at ECC....

I like the post too but it's not realistic...

Unless he was running up credit cards or something you couldn't afford this on 1.8. JB Absolut and lavish gifts for the ladies. And 1.2 for a pet?

Maybe though...

Think the most lavish waygook I met was a clotheshorse who would talk about the great deals he was getting on 200 000 sunglasses and 300 000 for shoes. He would go drinking but only go to happy hours. (He was a cheapskate with everything but clothes.) Remember the Grand Ole Opry? They used to have a happy hour Sat with Bud for 1500 I think and then at 10 or so it would go up to 3500. So at 9:55 one night this guy orders 18 Buds. (EIGHTEEN!) Wink He was terrified he would have to pay 3500 for one at some point. Freaky indeed. He was lavish but it was one extreme to the other.
