Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogenous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: brown bread, good beer, bars with good
tunes, English book stores etc.
Remember the FFF RULE. FFF=Fun For Foreigners.
If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.
This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains.
I, unfortunately, live in Inchon where the FFF factor
is almost in the negative range. I know! |

I don't know Incheon that well, as I was there about 3 years ago for an interview, but I find it hard to believe that you can't find any of these things at the Carrfeour I saw there. Those of you who are there. Is this poster right?
Me, I teach at a university 90 minutes away in the farm land, but because it's a uni, there are plenty of fun things to do; lots of restaurants, hofs, etc, all catering to the students. Also, I teach 4 days, so I'm in Seoul for 3 and sleep at my apartment in Kyongidan. |

Hmm. . . I don't know about that. I've seen some posts on Dave's that were so idiotic that they make this one look like good advice.
Do a search and you will see for yourself. |

Well, the FFF reminds me of another word that begins with 'F' and fits in the phrase 'totally *beep* ed up'.
But then having lived in one of the scummier parts of Inchon, I can't help but sympathize. |

It seems to me that the OP hates Incheon, loves Seoul and may have never lived' worked in Daegu, Busan, Daejon, Cheonan.
Having worked in Daegu, and been to Busan, Daejon and Cheonan I never had a problem with the FFF being less than 85 to 90.
As for where I work now, I'd say that it's about 70 |

Damn, that bread that looks and tastes like Brown bread in my freezer is actually faux brown bread.
Considering Incheon is fifty km outside of Incheon, it should still receive a 50 FFF rating.
I say we give the OP a SSS rating (SSS being Silly Sad Sort(of person)) |

Paris baugette sells brown bread, dammit! Daejeon is fun... they have English bookstores... granted, they may not be "whatsthebook" or Kyobo but they have English books! Also, there are stores in Daejeon that sell foreign food! Just gotta ask! |

Yep, gotta say that many of the best nights I've had in Korea have been in Incheon and Daejeon.
The city doesn't make the party- YOU do! |

All that stuff is there, it just depends upon your own standards.
But none of the cities in Korea are nearly as sexy as The Republic Of Seoul. I mean, you can stay up all night... and they got lots of foreigners there... and it is so easy to pretend, just for a second, that you're in any major urban center back home.
Now, I prefer Seoul just because I come from a small city and I like the idea of being able to just cut and go somewhere I find interesting when I'm bored. But this "FFF" equation really only matters depending upon how far removed you've become from the university lifestyle. Older ex-pats I've met seem to be able to make themselves at home in any town here.
If you want nothing more than to party, then yeah, living in the ass-end of Incheon is hell. |
