Can I get a Korean e-mail address that doesn't require me to input every single personal piece of information attainable to get it? Including an ID number that won't work?
I'm sick of my resumes and letters not getting to people. |

Which Korean email sites did you try, Derrek? I was thinking just yesterday that I should get a Korean email account for the same reasons and would like to know the answer to this question.
Though, I heard that Gmail was getting through the spam filters for daum.net and others. Do you know if there is truth in this? If it is true and you don't already have a gmail account, I will send you an invitation if you pm me your email address.
By far, this email problem is the biggest pain in terms of applying for jobs online. Most Korean employers don't even know that this is a problem and are left scratching their head when they get so few people applying for jobs. |

Gmail isn't working for Daum. Derrek....try Paran. They have a sign in page for foreigners. It does require a fax or phone call to set up.

What's the problem, exactly? Daum spam filters are filtering out emails from non-Korean providers?
Derrek, have you tried yahoo.co.kr? |

Will look at Paran later today, Demo.
I tried yahoo.co.kr before this message, and they wanted more information than I was interested in giving, including ID number, address, phone, and tons more -- required. It was all in Korean, and I didn't take a lot of time to read it, but it was enough for me to say, "forget this."
Yes, the problem is that too many of my e-mails are blocked. Now even those from my personal ISP end up in my advisor's "spam mail" box, when they used to be fine before. I swear that Korea is on a vendetta to block anything and everything non-Korean. It's really nuts.
I've had resumes sent back from really good jobs -- 1 week after sending -- never being received. I'm trying to get into a non-teaching gig, and my e-mails aren't even getting there... ugh. |

| The whole thing about giving all this personal information looks to me like a way to have control over who says what, and limit access to ethnic Koreans and other foreigners. It's almost like the internet in China. |

I assume you've all taken the time to sign my petition then? This is the very thing I'm trying to change.
Bloody annoying. I was trying to put an ad up on a search engine and they wanted my ֹεϹȣ, plus my ȣ (business registration number). I used my friend's number for the first one but then they asked for the other one along with company address...
It's like they don't even want my money. |

Yes, I signed the petition a long time ago, mith.
However, I wouldn't give my number to Daum anyways, so I have and will forever live around it.
Similarly, I would not give my social insurance number (the Canadian equivalent) to Yahoo.ca over a very insecure network just for a paltry e-mail account.
This is the real issue for me; not getting them to accept my most personal and valuable piece of ID, but the fact that they require it at all for such a small thing. A bank loan? Ok. An e-mail account? Hmmm.......no. |

Guess I should hang on to my Korean email addys then - I didn't realize they were so hard to get these days.
Although I don't think the problem is how to get a Korean email address - and I think the co's are justified in asking for an ID number - but rather, how the the spam filters of Korean web-based email providers work.
Are you sure they're blocking all emails from non-Korean domains? Surely they're not blocking emails from Derek's ISP? Or are they filtering out emails because they're wrtitten in English? And which email companies are we talking about? Daum? |

Hi King.
Yes, we are talking primarily about Daum filtering out anything from Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail.
Then, mithridates is talking about how we can't get one of those accounts with our alien registration cards, as they aren't recognized as being "real". With Daum filtering and probably 80% of the Korean population using that service, it's a problem.
I had a Daum account from about 7 years ago, but it has since become dormant. If you have one, hang on to it....and keep it active.
Heck, you could probably sell it to Derrek. |

Demo, do you know of a Korean email service that has pop3 access? As technologically advanced as Arirang TV claims Corea is in the IT sector, pop3 access doesn't seem to have ever caught on here as a regular baseline service.

... not to mention Derrek's site, seoulstream, and any other foreign-owned domains? How do they know seoulstream is even owned by a wayguk?
Erm, doesn't this sound a little impossible?
More than likely, your emails are being filtered for some other reason, probably because they're in English. I've been using Daum for quite some time now, and get Hotmail and Gmail and Yahoo emails perfectly. |
