I've tried this with my classes that have been studying the language for three years or more. It works with some, fails with others...

What are your opinions on the matter? In general it seems to help with class control. Also, it provides them at least the class period to practice their English. If they're anything like me when I was studying French for 6 years, they're not practicing the language outside of class. Very Happy

I always talk about my first day in German class. No English was spoken at all, and English was not spoken the whole term.

It worked.

It's also always the case that when a kid cries, it's after some other kid said something to them in Korean. Until they learn how to insult each other in English, making them speak English only is a good way to avoid class breakdowns.

My method is to give each student three stars. Each time they speak Korean, they lose a star. Lose all three stars, they go to the office, and my Korean partner calls his mother.

It takes many hours of practicing to learn a language. If you are only in class three days a week, that's at most 6 hours a week of practice IF you speak the foreign language in class. Even THAT much is hardly enough.

I tell the kids that if they want to speak Korean, they're welcome to go home.
