|
|
Hey,
I've been doing research and homework on Korea for months and months. I feel confident that I know what I'm getting into when I arrive at the end of the month.
However, in all my research I keep coming across the word Gyopo and still have not figured out what it means.
Some job postings will say "Sorry, no gyopos" while others will say "looking for a gyopo".
What's the deal? What's a gyopo?
If someone can answer this stupid question for me I'd appreciate it.
Thanks |

A foreigner of Korean ancestry or a Korean emigr (if I didn't get that exactly right I'm sure I'll hear about it).
Edit: The following applies to those schools advertising 'no gyopos'
In other words all the school really cares about is appearance- those who look Korean need not apply. I often think that Gyopos have the worst of both worlds...

The only Korean-American I worked with had the best of both worlds! He was in his 40s and had lived in America for 15 years or so after he came out of the military. I used to feel that within our school he was in the enviable position of getting all the priviledges of being a foreign teacher (no admin tasks, generous contract, free housing) as well as the respect due to a Korean adjoshi. During the time I was working there he seemed to settle back into 'being Korean', and the American 'persona' and accent became more and more unconvincing, at least to 'real' foreigners. For him being a 'foreign teacher' was just this shallow identity which could be thrown on when it suited him, in the classroom obviously but also when student mothers were around and he wanted to pick up privates or, to take a different example, when a policeman was asking for a driver's license!
Of course none of this would matter much if he was a decent English teacher; but the consensus was that he was hopeless! |

I worked with a gyopo in suwon some years back. Granted he was out going, knew how to play, was (is)tall, and all this made him the hottest thing in Suwon during his reign there. God he scored. |

Ok, so I'm getting both sides of the story. I assume that I am a gyopo, being an adopted half-korean/half-caucassian.
So... Please define getting boned.
I'm going to assume that whether I get the best or worst of both worlds will depend on where I am teaching, right? |

Gyopos are 100% Korean in ethnicity, so you're not a gyopo. If you look totally Korean you might be mistaken for one. If you're of mixed parentage you can 'look forward' to being called "Twiggy", or 'fried' (from Ƣ). Whereas gyopo is simply a neutral, descriptive term, Twiggy is pretty much derogatory. |

The correct term for mixed Koreans/caucasian people is "hapa"... There are quite a few famous Korean celebrities who are hapas..., but in everyday Korean society Hapas are looked down upon as something less than "pure". |

Don't let ANYONE discourage you from coming though! Kind of a pet peeve of mine when I hear non-whites say they want to come to Korea.. and then have a bunch of whites say 'its going to be hell. you will be hated. they will discriminate against you. i thought i had it bad. oh man you are going to just die here' type thing!!
I'm not saying anyone has said this yet.. but seems like someone somehow always wants to project his (self-)discrimination woes as a white dude and how they'll get you worse scenario! (just a pet peeve of mine).. i'm white myself.. but jut bugs me to hear it..
Anyhow, now that I've scared you even more!! I just want to say.. come on over.. there are tons of gypopos already here.. I have met lots of mixed koreans as well.. (i studied korean for awhile in Sogang - and the place is crawling with kyopos!! and all of them quite cool too!)..
As far as teaching goes.. if you look more white.. you'll probably be treated just like a whitie.. if you look more korean.. then you'll probably be treated more like a korean.. and there will unfortunately be some kind of expectation that you know (or at least understand) korean if you look korean..
Anyhow, lots of kyopos, mixed bloods, non-whites and all the rest.. particularly in the schools studying Korean.. but also in the hogwans from time to time as well.. (most i've met seem to be more into studying korean culture and studying korean language though).. rather than any strong desire to teach english to koreans.. |

Says who? Why should a word originating in Hawaii be the 'correct word' for half whites/Koreans? |
