Winter Crackdown on Teenage Prostitutes
A 40-day crackdown on adolescents selling sex from Jan. 5 until last Sunday netted 379 young prostitutes, 94 more than last year.
Of the arrested youngsters, 57 percent were jobless after dropping out of school. High school girls made up 19 percent of the group, and 16 percent were middle school girls. By region, there were 88 arrests in Seoul, or 23.3 percent of the total number. North Jeolla Province had the smallest number - four - of adolescents nabbed for selling sex.
In return for sexual services, 37 percent of teenage prostitutes charged between W100,000 and W150,000 (US$ 97-146), while 28 percent got W60,000 to W100,000, and 22.9 percent received less than W50,000. Some 8.9 percent said they were paid more than W160,000. Last year, the biggest group - 31 percent - charged W60,000-100,000. Another 26 people, or 6.8 percent, sold sex in return for gifts or a place to sleep.
Regarding the motive for turning to prostitution, 42 percent said that they needed money for entertainment, while only 33 percent said that they needed money to support themselves. Three percent started selling sex out of sexual curiosity and 1 percent at the recommendation of friends.
Police caught 721 men who were either customers or pimps of the teenagers - 168 more than last year - and arrested 101. The majority were in their 20s and 30s - 40 and 30 percent respectively. Some 32 percent were company employees, 25 percent were unemployed and 15 percent were self-employed.

The statistics are confusing me.
If I'm reading this correctly, of the adolescents they nabbed,
19% High school girls
16% Middle school girls
And the other 65%?
And then the other statistic about the men. It says some were employed by companies, some were self-employed, and some were unemployed. But there's still a percentage left over.
ARRGH!!! Math and prostitutes!!!! |

Minor sex trade rises despite prostitution crackdown
Minors have turned to the Internet to advertise their availability for prostitution after a crackdown on brothels, police said yesterday. School winter vacation and easy Internet access throughout the country have contributed to an increase in minors involved in the sex trade, a police official explained when announcing statistics.
A report showed that 82 percent of the teenagers met the partners through the Internet. The teenagers were paid between 100,000 to 150,000 won ($97 to $145) per meeting.
Under the newly introduced laws, those who have sex with a prostitute can face a jail term of up to one year and a fine ranging up to 3 million won ($2,631). To avoid this, men are using the Internet to meet teenage partners thinking it is safer, officials pointed out. A police official said, "With teenagers actively looking for customers, juvenile prostitution is increasing."
A high school student arrested last year confessed, "I started this when I heard from my friends that the Internet has become popular among men looking for sex partners." Police said 42 percent of teenagers sell sex for spending money, 33 percent to earn a living and 3 percent out of sexual curiosity. The remaining 22 percent gave a variety of responses.

Boys, maybe? Or maybe they just meant these girls are still attending school, as if it's any more tragic. |

Yeah me, too. I was totally looking for the headline to be "Foreign Men Caught Having Sex with Korean Minors." True or not. |

I notice a few things. First, it sounds as if most of the girls involved do not actually need to turn to prostitution to survive. Secondly, the men who are arrested are charged with having sex with a prostitute which makes it sound like the charge is the same whether they do it with an adult prostitute or a juvenile. It also says that stricter laws have led to an increase in juvenile prostitution. |

I don't read that into the article. Rather, it looks to me like the crackdown has led to an increase in the use of the internet, instead of face-to-face meetings, for prostitutes and johns to find each other. |
