Anybody know the procedure for renewing your contract?
My contract's up soon, and I'll be renewing. Is it totally painless? Do I have to submit my degree and certs to immigration and mission to Japan?
If anyone who has renewed their contract and knows the deal, please let me know. Thanks in advance. |

I'm half through the process at the moment. See my thread here. My piece of advice is get the school on to it ASAP to avoid unecessary stress of getting the paperwork right. |

I renewed contracts at the same school and had no problems with immigration, the only problem was with my school's slack attitude.
If you are staying at the same school with the same address (ie: not changing branches) and the owner is still the same as in your original contract, you should be ok. I didn't have to go to Japan. Just had to go to Immigration with a manager from my school and the usual paperwork. I think it has to be done before your contract expires (sounds logical) but mine was done two or three days after and wasn't a problem.
Good luck |

if you got the right paperwork from the school, it will take you 20 minutes at immigration, no need to leave your passport or ARC. Even in Seoul it takes 20 minutes.
Just make sure you also apply for a multiple re-entry permit. Your renewal doesn't allow for multiple re-entry's |

It's a very simple process. Sign a new contract, and take it to the immigration office along with other things like your passport, ARC, etc. (your school should tell you exactly what you need), and pay some money. The immigration officer will write a new expiration date on the back of your ARC. That's it. No trip to Japan is necessary -- you only have to do that when you change employers or visa status.
If you plan to leave the country and come back more than once during the coming year, you can save yourself some hassle later by also buying a multiple re-entry permit at the immigration office while you're there. |

Ok here's the deal.
First up get a korean from your school to ring up immigration and ask them before you leave. As the only consistency immigraiton has is that it's inconsistent.
Chances are you will need some/all of the following.
1. Passport with a years validity on it.
2. ARC Card.
3. English verison of your contract. Red stamped.
4. Korean version of your contract. Red stamped.
5. A copy of the school's business liscence.
6. A reference letter (seoul immigration defintely needs it don't know about the places). This is the same document your school intially filled out about you. Basically saying that you are a good person, haven't/won't commit any crimes during your stay. It needs to be notarised by a lawyer. I think that this is the form but check with your school.
7. Transcripts/Degree. Bring a copy just in case.
8. 30k fee and fill in this form
Go early in the morning to immigration otherwise you'll be there all day. I came at 3 this afternoon and the queue was 114 people long with just 4 people processing visas. Fourtantly the guy who turned me away on saturday let me go through without having to line up again. They will process it on the spot so get a renewal of your re-entry permits while you're there so you won't have to go back.
Also remember that your school will probably think that the day your visa expires is a good day to go to immigration. They would be wrong. Try and get done as far in advance as possible to avoid uncessary stress.
Once finished your card will look like this
note that box one has the new date of my visa expiration. |

This should all be done by your school.
CMG, I don't know why you put up with it, other than that they weren't on the ball.
Put your foot down next year and tell them to get off their ass and do it themselves.
Sadly, I also had to "school" my school on how to renew the visa. They kept wanting to give me money to fly to Japan again. |

Part of the reason that I took a lot more an active role in my visa renewal process is that my school doesn't know anything about paperwork for immigration and the person who looks after me doesn't even know where immigration is located
They wanted to let my visa expire and then send me to japan. And I'm like ahhh no because i'm going to get a fine and your going to waste money. |
