Somebody recently told me that he got some very interesting reponses when he asked his class, "What would you do if you found out that one of your friends was gay?"

One student said, "I would take my friend to the hospital."

Another student wanted to know if they could catch it (like it's a contagious disease).

He said some that someone even asked him in class if one woman could impregnate another woman.

The students in this class are adults who are in their twenties. Hard to believe.

It beats the "Kill them" response they get in many other parts of the world.

I'm waiting for the day that there will be a commonplace Korean word to replace the adoption of the English word "gay" in Korean.

Korea, embrace your gayness!

(For a laugh, I typed gay into Google's translate tool, got , translated it back to English and got Eastern characteristic child

See? All Korean kids are gay; they just don't know it yet.

Why do you think the views of a couple of students could be extrapolated to the whole country? I have heard similar views in other western countries and just brush it off as bigotry, not as something indicative of the national psyche. You have to get over that gut reaction to tar all people here with the same brush when one of them says something stupid, god knows I did for the first year I was here. Actually, I was discussing similar things with my students today (all early 20s, male and military cadets), and I was surprised how liberal they were.

Cheers

On the topic of Korean ignorance, one of my co-workers said the other day: "Ddukbokki is very cheap and healthy."

I'll give her the first one. But y'know, just because it's Korean doesn't make it health food. Rolling Eyes

Actually, I've heard the 'kill them' response from Koreans more than enough times to make it more than an isolated incident.

Also, alot of them have, or had lived in the west for a long time.

Make of that what you will. The fact is, Koreans, in general, are homophobic and extremely ignorant about homosexuality.

Of course many other people from other countries are the same way.

It doesn't excuse the Koreans though.

In fairness to Koreans, it should be pointed out that the "disease" model of homosexuality was invented by western psychiatrists, and that homosexuality was in the diagnostic manual as a bona fide mental illness until 1972.

The following book contains two interesting chapters on the persecution of homosexuals by western psychiatrists:

At first it sounds bad, but I think back to my highschool days and answers like that were commonplace.

A: What would you do if a gay man hit on you?
B: If a gay man even touched me, I would beat the crap out of him.

A: What if your best friend were gay?
B: My best friend wouldn't be gay.
A: What if he was?
B: Not possible.
A: Just suppose he was.
B: He wouldn't be my friend anymore.

A: What do you think of gays kissing in public?
B: I think it's $%# disgusting. They should keep that in their homes.
A: What about straight people?
B: It's alright, I suppose.
A: Holding hands?
B: I don't like it either. As long as I can't see it, then it's ok.

See... Not sure if these same type conversations occurred in your highschool, but they did in my highschool. I can even say that I shared the same views before going to university and travelled a little bit. Then I became more mature (debatable) and cultured to other ways of life. I guess the same goes for Korea. Can we really expect them to readily accept gay when the whole gay culture is buried underground and 99% of them haven't even left their own country. I think it's still going to take some time before the ignorance is gone. Heck, look at all the troubles the Western world is going thru trying to legalize gay marriage.

I think it's fair to say that most men have a different standard for women, though:

"Two men kissing in public. Disgusting. Two women..can I watch?"

I totally agree with Jaga. It makes me wonder sometimes whether some so called 'teachers' on this board actually attended university. Could possibly be a good indication of who purchased their degrees online. A basic rule the op should learn is to quantify his/her statements, makes you less of a knob that way.

Oddly one of the positives about this idea in Korean society that homosexuality doesn't exist here is men and boys don't have much homophobia in terms of male/male interaction and interaction with their GFs. To wit, boys and men don't get paranoid in the west with that idea like "if I do x, people will think I'm gay!"

So, I notice boys in my class engage in social grooming. Teenage boys will sit on each other's lap on a crowded subway. Men will wear the same flowered shirt as their GF and don't get all paranoid about holding her purse.

It's kind of refreshing once you get over your western shock and awe.

Anyway, Korea has a long way to go before it joins Blue State America/Canada Sans Alberta/Scandinavia in terms of liberal, democratic thought.

Read carefully. The first post referred specifically to students in a certain class so the statement is quantified.

VC, look at the title, Koreans, plural, implying that what is said in this class may be the case for everyone. Poor choice of words, imho, would be better off saying 'holy crap, ignorant student'.

As Jaga said, your topic heading is all encompassing , implying that you believe all Koreans are ignorant.
