Went out for lunch at a new place in itaewon called suji's.
It's in a little alley just to the left behind limelight.

It has a great brunch menu. Waffles, big breakfast, bacon biscuts etc.

Meatloaf sandwiches, sheppards' pie. Also Roast beef and yorkshire pud on sunday arvo!

Service was a little slow but the food was excellent. Just like a good cafe back home.

Scottish chef knows his stuff.

Let's make sure that this place stays afloat and try and support so REMEMBER TO TIP YOU CHEAP BASTARDS!

But Korean people don't want to be tipped, generally. My husband tries to tip but they refuse it most of the time....

It's not run by koreans. Also they have a tip jar.

Yeah, it's hit and miss. Drinking and not tipping seems just wrong to me. Your basic Korean restaurant if I get some exceptional service, I don't mind leaving a tip. Sometimes you have to do what I call "tip and dash". You wait until the waiter goes to the bathroom, leave your tip, and then make a mad run for the door before he can chase you out of the restaurant with the money.

Someone has noted this might be counter productive. A person might lose his/her job if he/she was so unobservant as to let a customer leave 4,000 won on a table...

Why should we tip? Are the paying the staff below normal and hoping that tips will cover the shortfall? If they are then they are cheap barstardos! Just because the owner may or may not come from a country where tipping is the norm, doesn't mean we have to tip them here in non-tipping Korea. So what if they have a tip jar, just being hopeful I guess that North Americans will habitually leave a tip.

Here's a tip, steer clear any restaurant where tips are expected.

BTW... I don't know where Limelight is, so could you give people who are not in Seoul a little more specific directions, please? Thanks.

Suji's is great. Cafe atmosphere, lots of choices, very cafeish! .....The food was a little pricey but not terribly.

I had freaking great biscuts and gravy....HOME MADE BISCUTS!!!!! Had me whistling dixie. The only thing missing was grits.

What was funny is my friend had Shepards pie and apparently it was first class! Clean bright ...coffee refills and yes a tip jar.

As an American and someone who has worked in a restuarant it is hard work. Usually low paid. So I tip. And BTW the tip jar was stuffed full when we got there.

So I second what CLG says!

Considering rent, staffing, etc. etc. etc. how much could you provide it for?

What else is included with "bacon & eggs" for W13,000? (Besides salt, pepper, other condom-mints, and napkins)

Actually, though, when most people's only obvious options are shopping/cooking for themselves or the Hyatt's W2?,000 breakfast buffet, I think even at those prices, this place could carve out a big-enough niche to stay in business. It's a small restaurant, apparently. I suppose their only real hope is to charge the absolute most the traffic will bear, since they sure haven't a prayer with a "volume approach". I'll have to check it out.

*EDIT* -- Itaewonguy reminds me the Puffin Cafe is a sort-of alternative, but I don't associate that place with good home-style eating. "Coffee shop with a sandwich problem" would be more accurate. And maybe it's just been a coincidence, but almost every time I go there, they're training new waitresses, and they never fail to screw up orders or forget things. And I mean NEVER.

well thats not 100% true..

the owner Suji is korean.. she is an on hands manager with MAT who is German korean..
the chef barry is scottish but his cooks are korean, who also do the cooking.. the waitresses and waiters are all korean!
so the only foreigners there is the HEAD CHEF and the Manager..

this restaurant will make a good alternative from LA CIGALE alittle smaller they have a nice patio area too tucked away from the smog, the menu is alittle pricy but its fresh food and you wont find anything else like it in itaewon.. the closest there was was THE PUFFIN CAFE for breakfasts
but this place kicks there ass..
so yeah its a good little bistro and I hope it lasts the test of time..
expect to pay 20.000 a head!! which is a good price..
usually samgyuepsal dinner will cost you 10.000 a head..
burger king will cost 5.000 , and most other places will cost you 20.000
so its a fair price..
if you are looking for food in the 20.000 won area..
dont tell me you guys dont pay that for a dinner sometimes..
the have real FISH N CHIPS in beer batter! remember its a restaurant so you are not gonna get it for 2 dollars.. its around 18.000 won..
they have fresh apple crumble for around 6000 won..
so even a late coffee and dessert will be fine..
anyway.. ohh and the rib eyes are imported from Australia so its top class beef..

I think 13000 for bacon and eggs is nuts. And 18000 for fish and chips? Gecko's (albeit cheesey) fish and chips is amazing and only 10, 000 won.

I'd like to give props to the starlite cafe on the main Itaewon road, a little past helios's on the bottom floor. Great breakfast type stuff and very reasonable prices.

Plus they don't expect a tip for over priced food.

Shocked
