I know I'm in Asia & all, but I can't seem to find stir fry sauce. You would think this would be an easy task, but it's proving a tad more difficult than I would have thought. My question: Does anyone know of a store that carries Szechaun sauce or Oyster sauce? I live in Daegu, but if you know of a chain-store that carries it, that'd great too.

A couple other items. Sour cream, bacon bits, Kraft Dinner (I'd like actual KD), HP sauce, and shake & bake. These are some items I just have to find! Where are they?

Sour cream is at costco- but you buy a litre at a time. Carrefour might have the stirfry sauces, but it will be labelled in Chinese and Korean ( I got Hoisin sauce like that) Costco also has non KD mac and cheese.

as for the other stuff- see if there are any black market shops near the base in Daegu- if so, they should have some of those things.

Try your local WalMart for Chinese cooking sauces. The one in Masan carries a variety of them. Most of the writing on the bottles is in Chinese, but there is English in small letters on the back. The bottles are red and yellow.

The other stuff you'll have to find at the black market shops. Some poster from Daegu can tell you where to look.

Sour cream can be found at Cost co. Daegu has one.
Bacon bits can be found at Haddon house in Seoul
Kraft dinner...good luck. You can get Mac & Cheese(the American name) or Leonardo at Costco(as good if not better than KD)
HP sauce should be available in almost all supermarkets. Check around.
Shake and bake, sorry I cant help you there.

Stir fry sauce can also be found in most supermarkets. I know Emart carries hoi sin sauce for sure. For stir fries I use a pork bulgogi marinade available in all supermarkets, its red and nice and spicy(add a little pepper for some real zip)

Hope this helps

I got Lee Kum Kee Oyster Sauce at E-Mart, a big 510g bottle for less than 3000won I think - I just remember that it was waaaay cheaper than what we pay at home... I have also seen it in small local supermarkets.

I see Oyster Sauce at my local little Ajossi Mart. You just have to read the labels closely and look for . It's with a lot of other stir fry sauces. Szechuan is a little harder to find. I have been able to find Thai sauces at Home Plus, and I stock up on them. Great on mandu.

Heh, heh -- sometimes it just makes me giggle.

Man -- dew.

HA!

You are a life saver! I'll be getting a membership this week. Now, on to finding the bacon bits! (Stuffed potatoes anyone?!) Mmmm. Actually, another thing I wanna find are cheese & potato-filled perogies. I know I will be out of luck for finding spicy Italian sausages... but I'm praying costco will have those.

I will give E-mart a good look this week... I need that sauce. You can only eat Korean food for so many days in a row...

Ajossi mart? I've never seen one here in Daegu. But you've got a brilliant idea, Thai sauces. Oh my god, I need those for my stir fry!!

Anyhow, I did find this Szechuan powder mix at a small grocery store here in Daegu... made my first stir fry last night. Ohhh, it was wonderful. I used red bean paste (spicy) and mixed it in with the sticky rice, then added peppers, garlic, brocolli, onions... and other assorted things. Next, I plan on adding meat & bok choy!!! Cooking for yourself is THE BEST thing in the world... I'm surprised it's taken me 2 months to get my cooking-self in gear, but really, sometimes ingredients plays a big role.

Is there a Home Plus in Daegu? Would anyone know what to tell the taxi driver to get there, or if I can take a bus to get there?

I bought a nice pack of spicy red Italian sausages at Cost co. Damn they are good. They go great as is or in a jambalaya.

Cost co is a treat.

I look at those sausages drooling on the floor every time I go to Costco. The price is a bit too rich for me though. 17,000?

Wow, that's insane. I remember in Vancouver I could buy like 4 nice big ones for under 5 bucks!! Who would have thought eating out would be cheaper than eating in. I guess when you come to Korea, you win some you lose some. Rolling Eyes

But I'll probably buy them anyways, nothing goes so good with perogies.

Actually, you get about 12 chunky sausages in the 17,000 pack. So it's not so expensive.
