...at the local cornerstore? I thought this was the land of cheap booze. Yeah soju is cheap but it reminds me of mother's nail polish. Those are three words I don't want to think about when I'm boozing.

Korea's Inflation Highest Among OECD Nations
The nation showed one of the world's highest consumer inflation rates last year due to soaring raw materials prices and high labor costs. According to the National Statistical Office (NSO), the nation's consumer inflation rate was 3.6 percent in 2004, 1.4 times larger than the average rate of 2.5 percent among 30 OECD member countries.

Subway Fares Rise 61% in 5 Years
Costs for transportation and education services have surged during the past five years, contributing to a double-digit increase in consumer prices.

Charges for basic home telephone services rose 48 percent, with public telephones shooting up by 40 percent and inter-city charges 7.5 percent. Local phones, however, decreased 13.3 percent, while mobile phone charges dropped 19.8 percent.

Prices of "soju," the country's most popular liquor, rose 22.8 percent at bars and restaurants, while beers edged up 1.6 percent.

Men's and women's shoe prices increased 41.7 percent and 31.7 percent, respectively. Laundry soap prices rose 16.2 percent and soap powder by 28.7 percent. Toothpaste jumped 18.4 percent with shampoo rising 15.8 percent and lotion increasing 8.8 percent. Movie tickets rose 16.5 percent and newspaper subscription rates increased 21.5 percent. The prices of digestive aids jumped 28.3 percent, with cold medicines and tonic drinks ascending 14.4 percent and 17.4 percent, respectively. Medical consultation and diagnosis fees rose 16.1 percent with medication costs rising 26.8 percent.

If you think that's expensive and inconvenient,
go and see how much beer you can buy at a corner store in Canada
for under two bucks.

I've been in slight shock since I came back. Absolutely everything was cheaper last year at this time when I was here.

Beer more expensive in corner stores? Of course.

Because of their lower quantities of stock/less purchasing power, cornerstores have higher markups than supermarkets. It's a pretty simple concept.

The cheap beer is the main reason I'm still here. I go to Carrefour pretty much once a day & buy the 1.6 litre plastic ones. Basically 3 for 10000.

I heard there's a Carrefour in Bundang, but for the life of me, I haven't been able to find it. Can you tell me where it is, say, from JongJa Station?

THere's at least two of 'em. One's at Ori Station - or a little way out of it (it's the building that now has huge teddy bears all over it. freaky.). The other is just outside Yatap Station, same building as the bus terminal.
