When I started my job last year I wasn't too thrilled at the idea of teaching boys. Girls seem so much easier. But now that I've had a year of them I actually enjoy them, they're funny and there's never a dull moment if you're teaching boys.

I'm teaching to all 3 variations and I like mixed the best. It's simple for me, the boys and girls keep each other in check it seems like. Laughing

Boys are little horrors but most girls are sweet if silent. I would say girls but have a hunch that I'd be bored to tears by the silence.

At first it seemed that girls were so much easier, but I'm starting to have second thoughts about that. If I could get rid of three or four certain boys I'd rather never see again, I might say boys. A mixed group with one dominant girl is probably the easiest to manipulate.

Now and then you can get that perfect class where neither the boys or the girls are dominant so there's no infighting and both groups just want to get on with the lesson. Nice!

I think it depends whether you are a Male or Female. For me, guys were easier because it's easier to relate to them. It's easy to talk sports, movies, computer games with them. Girls on the other hand like to talk about cute guys, pop music and shopping. Not easily relatable topics for me.

As far as discipline, guys are easier to discipline than girls in my opinion. The guys know not to cross the limit. They have been taught by their home room teachers that they will get smacked if they are out of order. With the girls it's always a constant battle with their hormones. Stomach cramps, headaches, all that PMS stuff. They also know that if they have a male teacher that they can also whine to a male since we are more susceptible to give in to their whines or crocodile tears.

I would have to go with the guys.

Edit: It's true about getting that dominant girl in check. However, if she isn't in the mood for studying that day, you can bet that the rest of the girls will fall in line with her. And... girls tend to hold grudges compared to guys, so you must be careful how you hand the class "leader"

My feeling is I'd like to teach same sex classes. Give me a class of all boys or all girls. Boys I can use the big brother thing to keep them in line. Girls I can use the cute, blonde foreign teacher who seems to be able to talk to them about girl things like puppies and handbags to keep them in some kind of awe like state of suspended animation. When they're mixed, it just does horrible things to the dynamics. But other teachers have other styles.

Errr, during the daytime a mixture is best (though I probably prefer all boys to all girls as all girls classes usually are flat and shy, though one boy will mak all the girls chatty oddly).
At nightime I'd like to paraphrase my good friend mister Tone Loc "this is the eighties and Bunny is down with the ladies"

In elementary girls are usually much better. In middle school and high it's hard to say. I can't do kindergarten. Male adults usually are not as good as women.

Just my experience of course.

So I prefer girls. But like a mix. Maybe just a majority (60-70%) of girls would be better for me.

One class I have, 5 girls are all good. Two or three of seven boys are OK. The others are a drag.

Another class about 8 out 11 boys are a pain. Both girls are good.

Elementary kids... the boys are often too crazy for my liking.

But one class has two good young boys and aout 5 out of 8 girls who are OK.

Strange.

I think girls take better to school period, not just languages. They have a better ability to sit still, listen, try to learn, be sincere and pleasant etc...

Boys are often simply not suited to the way classes works. Most cannot sit still or listen. They really need to be outside or something, kicking around a soccer ball or wahtever.

Girls are generally more studious, but they tend to be a lot moodier on average. Boys are rowdier, but don't hold grudges like girls do. I find I enjoy teaching the kids who actually like to study more, which ends up on average being girls.

Boys....by far. (And I teach middle school)

I am a female but luckily grew up with 4 brothers. There is nothing they can do I haven't seen done or had done to me. One day they had this rubber snake and were scaring all the korean teachers with it.

They threw it on my desk and I picked up and pretended to bite it's head off. I frequently have fake bugs on my computer. I love bioncles and put them on my desk.

They are in awe of my bee-catching-release program.

I know about wrestling, baseball and soccer (learned during world cup).

Boys are tougher don't whine and cry and don't seem to hold grudges.

My friends who teach in the girls schools and they seem to enjoy the quiet and yes the girls mind better but I think the first time I threatened a choke slam or wrote on their uniforms (in chalk "I sleep in english class") they would be a mess of tears.

Boys are easier to discipline. Rowdier but 45 minutes of holding your chair above your head. Or doing a love heart in front of the class or worse in the teachers room pretty much cures them.

All in all they are not as good at learning but they are more fun and when they decide they want to learn English they are amazingly insistent and dedicated.

Middle School: Boys in a heartbeat.
High School: Girls in a heartbeat.

Never mixed.

I'm like you...I grew up with four brothers so I generally enjoy the boys discussion topics more. I taught at an all-boys high school last year and I was suprised that I really enjoyed it. I was able to taunt them, make fun of their hair or their lack of "player" skills that they think they had. I come from a family of serious teasers and I think that really helped me to develo thick skin.
Students also really wanted to talk about more serious issues such as their hatred for the college entrance exam and the required military service.

I'll take teaching 40+ high school boys over teaching six co-ed elementary school kids anyday. But then again, I don't really like little kids (yes, flame on) and refuse to teach them. An all-girls high school would be interesting though...I might want to try that. I really go by the age I want to teach, not by gender. Little kids, hell no!
