Over the weekend after a late night out in hongdae I came home got a nice surprise. someone climbed up the piping on the side of my building like a monkey and break into my place through the window. Do they have many monkeys here? I had my laptop (6 months old), my digital camera (christmas gift), and some cash stolen. What a nice surprise after falling alseep on the subway and taking forever to get home since I now live in Suwon.

Anyway, I was wondering if you can get any insurance for your stuff here. Not sure if you can use travel insurance from back home or not. Is there a place you can get it here?

The police were useless, but I got what I expected. No real investigative work done, just looked where they came in, asked what they took and what it looked like. So I guess I can hope it turns up, but realistically its gone bye bye. I just wish I had a way to release the anger and frustration. Back in the country less than 2 weeks, in a brand new building and all this shit happens.

Anyway, people beware and maybe you should look into getting your own insurance. Any help would be useful. Thanks.

Unless you already had the insurance when the breakin happened, anything plans that you buy now will simply not cover this incident.

You may want to follow up on what your travel insurance covers in this case, contact your provider and find out. There are two other options that you may want to try out:

1.) If you are still, LEGALLY, considered a dependant, you can claim under your parents' home insurance (I did this in my home country when I was 21 and got broken into - that was the maximum age I could be to be legally considered a dependant).

2.) Did you make any of those purchases with a credit card? Most credit card companies insure any purchases you make with your card against theft. Find your old statements and contact your carrier to see if you can do this.

Good advice.

Our flat was also burgled once. ALL my jewelries were stolen... we called the police and they came.. saying there wasn't much they could do and I was hysterical. I insisted on having forensic done - they didn't want but I kicked up a real big fuss, got our lawyer involved and they couldn't refuse. Anyway, the forensic guy came and found that someone had climbed up through the pipes too. So anyway, we went to the police station, made a statement, gave them a list of all the stuff that got stolen.

You won't believe what happened.. apparently there was a thief in Daejeon that was KNOWN to do stuff like this and that he was thrown in jail some years ago for a few years. When he came out, he came back and was on it again!! What an idiot. Anyway, we got a phone call about 5 weeks after the incident with the police telling us that they caught the guy and recovered EVERYTHING, less cash. I was so surprised!!!!! So we headed down to the central police station, and lo and behold, every single piece of my jewelry was there. The SAME policeman busted him.

If you had insisted on having forensic done, they could've found finger prints or something...

Actually, the stuff was puchased on credit cards, so there is a record. Plus when my dad talked to the insurance company in Canada, they said i was covered as according to them Korea is only my temporary residence, so I just have to pay the deductable, and I am getting the stuff replaced. So I got very lucky. I didn't actually think they would cover me, since I am declared a non residence. Plus everything bought was put on my dads credit card, not sure if that helped.

I have bars on my windows now, so that will reduce the risk of something happening in the future. Thanks for your opinions though.

It's easy to get renter's insurance. It's quite cheap too. My siste-in-law is an insurance agent and she made the contract for us. I'm sure any insurance agent can do it for you provided you've got a translator.

Anyone else has any more info about renter's insurance? I have thought about it many many times here....as I have an apt crammed with all kinds of nice stuff....
I had it back in the states, and was thinking of insurance in relation to not just theft, but also, floods, fire.....other.
