I thought this was really cute.

I have a collected a few of my students' names on my MSN chat over this past year (they hardly use it). Today one of the mothers was using her daughter's account, and starts chatting with me about her daughter's TOEIC test today.

We ended up chatting for an hour!

She was really kind, and said a lot of nice things to me about what parents thought of me, etc. It was good to hear, and made me feel better about living in Korea, given all of the negative anti-teacher stuff lately.

She also said, "We want you to keep in touch with our daughter after she graduates." Shocked

I know they are just being really friendly and hope to find every opportunity for her daughter to continue her English practice, but I thought it was sort of funny, given the TV controversy lately.

It's nice to know we aren't all considered as "bad people."

He's in Bundang. It strikes me as an enclave of professional types and chaebol middle managers. The very people we're trying to crank out Smile

Yup. That would just about explain it.

SK Telecom is here, for example. But SK is moving to Seoul, so maybe that is a bad example.

We also draw from Seongnam, which brings a wide variety of families.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't Bundang an area in Seongnam city?
Also, does anyone know the population of Seongnam city?

Population (316,818 households)
937,780 people (10% of the entire population of Gyeonggi-do)

Seongnam city is geographically situated in the center of the Metropolitan region of the Korean peninsula and as a central city, old districts such as Sujeong-gu, Jungwon-gu, etc. with the formation of Bundang-gu in the 90's are harmoniously combined with new and old districts.

Most korean kids are computer savy. Some are computer whizzs, not necessarily, because they spend all day playing computer games. They have their home computers and elementry school kids have their own chat groups so they don't get invaded by lecherous old men surfing the net.

Picked all this up at a winter camp with my 6th grade elementry school kids. They broke their neck to try and get me onto SAYCLUB where they chatted, but were blocked because I wasn't Korean. Replys were "Please wait for 3 days while we check his identity" .They put me into a chat group which I haven't as yet been able to download from my home.

Seems like parents will never keep up with what their kids know which is a shame, because in the case of chatting in English it'll be a golden opportunity that's going to be missed by too many.
