A warning to all of you, that right now may not be the best time to met your young female students outside of school.
Today I meet some of my students for a graduation\going away get together at a local fruit ice shoppe. Yeah, yeah, I know it wasn't the smartest idea, given the current atmosphere, but they had just graduated middle school last week and gotten into the best girls high school in Incheon and I am going to be leaving Incheon soon, so wanted to congratulate them and say goodbye. And I am 31, too old to think of teenage girls as any more than just students.
Unfortunately, I guess some concerned citizen saw the waegukin out with Korean girls and called the cops, as the next thing I knew I was surrounded by some very angry police officers, calling me beyontae seki and other not so nice Korean words. Luckily though I had asked the girls to get permission from their mothers so a few phone calls cleared things up and I got away with just a warning from the police.
From now on, I am going to be REAL careful about my dealings with students and watch my back when out alone with Korean women till this all dies down. |

My guess is that they will view all single guys over the age of 30 with extra suspicion now too.
The whole thing is ridiculous double standard anyway. Old perverts "compensated dating" with schoolgirls is rife among ajosshis. Yet a single anonymous posting on the internet is enough to give them a reason to prejudice against every single foreigner.
All said, that "playboy" idiot should've been a bit wiser about korea and Koreans before he spouted all his drivel. |

what kind of warning did the police give you? i mean, you weren't making out with the kids, were you? just eating ice cream?
i can't see what they would warn you about... especially after talking to the parents.
even without the parents' permission, i wonder what the police really could have done to you. |

Harrassment, pure and simple.
Let's ask these wonderful cops what law they think you broke. |

Stupid. Really stupid. (not you, the other people involved)
If you were with one student, I could understand their fear, but geesh... total racist crap. And those cops... really sad. Very, very sad. |

I would've gotten every one of their names, found out where they worked and then told every single reporter and tv producer I know about it. Then I would've gone to tell those cops I worked together with for one night back in February last year. Also I would've put it up on my home page.
Anyway, it's too bad to hear that. First first-hand account of this, as far as I know... |

I'd love to make some Seoulstream news stories about this kind of mistreatment, but I'm sure they'd quickly find reason to deport me. |

Derrek, you dont sound like you are very confident in the rule of law in Korea. Whether it is true or not, the fact that many foreigners percieve the situation as you do shows that foreigners in Korea do not feel that their basic rights will be upheld, vis a vis Koreans. |

| Hmm, how odd. It didn't occur for you just to tell them to *beep* off. I know I would have and have done so in the past. Chances are they were probably just conscript cops who have no real authority anyway . If you weren't doing anything wrong you have no problems. Despite what you may think, K cops aren't a law unto themselves and the Conscripts are just young punks which you can scare. |

Do you really think so?..Hmm. I've heard of 2 people deported for publicly criticising govt policy, one on TV, one at a protest.
I write letters to govt and occasionally get into the papers protesting a range of issues- although I suppose I would be wary of slamming them on TV news. |

Y'know, it's funny. I was just thinking a similar thing and I was thinking it'd be cool to get together with you to do it (no sarcasm) but figured, nah -- no time and waning interest.
It would be fun, though, to have an opposing view done up really slick -- like a real documentary with bars over everybody's eyes. |

That would be fun. You could get some people to phone recruiters and say "Hi, I'm from Vancouver and I want to teach English..." and then get somebody else to say "Hi, I'm from South Africa and I want to teach English..."
Then you could film a staff room where the two topics of the day are:
-The children aren't having enough fun, so make the classrooms more fun
-Too many games in class and the mothers are complaining
I've been in more staff meetings like that than I can count. |

And add the Alvin and The Chipmunks distorted voice-over that they do on their exposes. |

Collectively, I think we're totally onto something here. |
