My Australian friend is coming to join me at my job next week. The school wasn't able to get its act together, so he will be coming on a tourist visa and will have to do a visa run the week after he arrives. My question is this: Will he have a problem at Immigration because he doesn't possess a ticket out of the county?

It should be OK. I am Australian and came here exactly the same way, on a tourist visa with a one way ticket. I've come back and forth like that a few times now.

It would be very unlikely. I've entered the country three times on a tourist visa (two of those times with no ticket out) and I was waved through with no hassle on each occasion. I know plenty of fellow Aussies who've experienced the same.

Still, as I'm sure you're aware, he/she should dress nice and at least look like the financially viable type when going through there.

Having just returned from Japan without an onward ticket, it didn't even concern the guys at immigration. He won't have a problem. It now seems to be the norm for employers to purchase one way tickets for teachers, no matter that it is illegal from an immigration standpoint. Smile

Immigration, no problem.
Checking in for the flight in Australia may be a problem.
I was denied boarding a Korean Air flight in Sydney last year because I only possessed a one way ticket to Korea and was coming in on a tourist visa. The airlines often will ensure you meet Korean immigration standards before they let you on the flight.
In the end my boss in Korea faxed through the flight details for my visa run to Osaka for the next week and that settled it, but it was a MISERABLE couple of hours running through that crap.

Gotta back up what trevor Collins said.

Entering Korea is no problems at all on a tourist visa. I have done it 3 times and all I've gotten was, welcome to Korea.

In Australia however, geezzzzzz.......
Twice, in Brisbane Airport I've had to argue with the guy to let me on the plane. I even had an outward ticket from Korea to Japan (but not Australia and hence the problem) and the young counter guy still wouldn't let me on. After i get him to call his supervisor and explain to him that what i am doing is legal I was finally let on the plane after 45 minutes of bullcrap. This has happened twice, same situation.

Korea.......no problem
Australia......big problem(especially Qantas/JAL)

Interesting posts, thank you. My buddy, although Australian, is coming from the U.K. (via Singapore), so I'm hoping that he won't encounter that problem.
