It will more than likely to hit 950 by summer. Just another good reason to stay for another couple of years.

Yeah, I was in Cambodia last week and showed someone a man wan note while discussing currencies. I said it was worth about $8- I was still thinking in terms of what it was when I came here. Damn! A 20% pay raise. Very Happy Of course, its the only way I've gotten a pay raise here. Confused

Fill this dumbass in... I got here 3 months ago and thought W2.4mil was roughly $2,400. Is this not the case... I'm not seeing where the 20% comes from.

If you came here in September last, the rate was about 1150 and is now about 1000.

So if you were earning 2.4 million your USD equivalent was about 2,090 USD.

At today's approximate rate of 1000 the same 2.4 million gives you a USD equivalent of 2,400 USD.

So, in 4 months, your salary in USD terms has increased by 14.8%.

And mine has gone down by 13%.

As I posted a few months ago, probably lower yet.

Its about time!

2000-2001 I was in Seoul when I should have been working in the US with the strong $.

2001-2002 I was in San Francisco when the US economy went to hell and San Fran got hit REAL hard.

2003-2004 I was back in Seoul.. and I guess that was almost just about right.

Last year I studied in Spain for a year and the US$ was pathetic to be paying for studies in Euros.

FINALLY going to make it up this year in Seoul on this exchange! Whew.

what was the rate just prior to IMF and just after the crisis?

I forget. Was it around 900 before and 1400 after?

I forget.. and I was here in 1996-1997 for a year.

All I know is I started at 1.2 million which moved to 1.4 million after two months.. and I was very happy with that!

Seems like it was below 900 though.

Jan 97 = 854
Feb = 868
Mar = 882
Apr = 896
May = 894
Jun = 891
Jul = 894
Aug = 893
Sep = 912
Oct = 929
Nov = 1035
Dec = 1482
Jan 98 = 1707
Feb = 1701
Mar = 1489
Apr = 1391

That's a depreciation of 50% in a year. (Or a rise of 100%, depending if you're selling or buying!)

Thats about right! I left in July of 1997 for Budapest. Glad to be gone!

Most of my friends and co-workers were hit real hard though afterwards. One of which were an American guy and his Korean fiance.. they stayed for a couple years hoping like hell they'd make their money back! The girl had something like 50million won which I guess suddenly became 30 million almost overnight.

I haven't sent money out of the country in five + years hoping it would eventually get better. The only good investment decision I've made. Very Happy
