[I_Am_Wrong]

a recently new Korean girlfriend who is free thinking, smart, funny, and beautiful? Nothing too big...just wondering what other people have bought for their significant others that have gone over well.

How well does she speak/understand English?If she's ok, try a book of poetry...then read it to her. Try a not-too-sappy beat poet like Charles Bukowski. Beautiful words, but not love poems or syrupy sweet in the least...here's one of my favorites...

shot down like an ex-pug selling

ingrown toenails
in an overnight

harping about
Spanish melodies and bones.

and everywhere is
nowhere---
the dream is as bad as
flapjacks and flat tires:

why do we go on
with our minds and
pockets full of
dust
like a bad boy just out of

you who were a hero in some
revolution
you who teach children
you who drink with calmness
you who own large homes
and walk in gardens
you who have killed a man and own a
beautiful wife

why I am on fire like old dry
garbage.

we might surely have some interesting
correspondence.
it will keep the mailman busy.
and the butterflies and ants and bridges and
cemeteries
the rocket-makers and dogs and garage mechanics
will still go on a

until we run out of stamps

ideas.

yeah she's fluent. she's also big into jazz.

take her to jazz concert. if you're poor, buy her a cd.

Yea, something jazzy. The Chica is big on musicals, so when I was stateside in New York, I bought her a bunch of CDs from musicals and some magnets and stuff. Might sound cheap, but I blew $100 on that stuff! So you could book seats at a jazz performance or go buckwild on a CD purchasing spree and beef up her collection.

If your girlfriend has some sort of musical interest, think about buying her an instrument. I got the Chica a digital piano for Christmas. She loves the hell out of it and is getting pretty good at it considering how long she's been practicing.

Jewelry and clothing can be hard to do because it may be the right size but still not fit right, or it might seem nice to you while she secretly despises it. The only success I've had with that kind of stuff is sticking to accessories or taking her shopping with me and letting her find something she likes. Less romantic.
