Avoid Compaq/HP. I've owned 3 of them. The first I was impressed with. The last two have sucked large. At technomart, the top most computer floor, has a kiosk that seems to sell used laptops. With laptops you seriously get what you pay for. A cheap laptop is cheap. Bad keyboard, lousy components... You'll soon wish you coughed up an extra $500 for something better.
If you're looking for a budget system, consider a higher end used "last years model".
Also read my stick post on buying a laptop in Korea, especially my note about asking for English Windows XP at the point of purchase.

What does "not too pricey mean"?
If its in your range, get a Mac, either a ibook or a Powerbook. i just bought a 12" Powerbook with DVD burner for 1600US with an educational discount. |

Brand is a big question of personal peference and bias.
I have an HP bought in Korea, came with a English XP home ...
No problems ...
I suggest take 2 Saturdays check out Technomart and Yongsan ...
Take notes and compare shop ...
Be sure to show your notes to the vendors as you go.
If you are in Seoul. |

So many brands use exactly the same components that they have more in common than not. What you are usually buying, and what separates most brands, is their service and warranty support.
Take a look at this site for reviews of machines & the companies who sell them:
