Well, after spending the last week doing numerous searches and reading posts that are relevant to my own interests, i have decided to post my own questions. Any insight/advice that anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Here, in short (but not so short!), is my situation:

I've been living in Taiwan for the last 7 weeks now, in a town south-east of Taipei. I originally came here to work for the long-term, but have since had other opportunities come my way. I have been filling in for a friend who had to fly home for an emergency situation, so it has been a good opportunity for some temporary full-time work for me. As it turns out, he will be returning just a few days before my tourist visa expires.

I've decided to use this experience and take it with me to south Korea. I've already been lied to by one recruiter in Korea (long story short, they ensured a solid job for me in a town with a friend, in order to get my friend to sign the contract. After my friend signed, the recruiting company turned around and said they did not have work for me... kinda frustrating).

Ultimately, I would like to work on Geoje-do as it seems that it would suit me perfectly, and i would be close to my friend (who lives in Tongyeong). I've been offered a job in Jinhae, which is also on the south coast, but i seem to have my sights set on Geoje-do now... As of now, it looks like I will be flying to Korea and looking for a job on my own steam (I'm finding it difficult to committ myself to a place without actually seeing it for myself). Tickets are pretty cheap from Taiwan so that's not a big deal for me.

Is there anyone out there that can offer some advice for finding work on Geoje-do? Is it still the norm for schools to supply free housing, even when i secure a job while in korea? i can crash at my friend's house in tongyeong for the time being, but does anyone know of some good/cheap hostels on Geoje as a temp base before securing my own pad?

And although i would like to work on Geoje-do at this point, I haven't said yes/no to the job offer in Jinhae yet, so any advice on that situation would be awesome.

The thing you have going for you is that you know about this website and maybe/hopefully that will help you find a decent job(they like newbies). I can't find a job. Why I don't know, especially for this supposed time of year when "they" need people. Today I went for an interview, this place offered 3 weeks of unpaid holidays and there was no mention of a bonus. I spoke with 3 people who work there and then out of the blue they asked me to give a 30 minute presentation. I have given presentations before, I'm not scared but the thing is I have never been hired for a job after giving a presentation so I was very relunctant to give them what they wanted. I acted as though I didn't want to because "I wasn't prepared," but the truth is I ain't getting paid and didn't feel like giving a free English lesson. My example of my teaching abilities are pretty good but I certainly wasn't in the mood to give them what they wanted without informing me of the hoops they wanted me to jump though so easily. They initially told me they needed someone immediately and I new that if I left that place without signing the contract I wouldn't be working there. The place is a long subway ride where I was from and they ended up telling me they need to interview other people. I don't think I'll be working there! Good luck with your job search!

This was your experience on Geoje-do? Or somewhere else in Korea?

Dont pay buymybook much heed. I'd guess Vanislander will be along shortly to give you a local lowdown.

Great, it'll be nice to get some useful advice, unlike buymybook's "I'm too good for everyone" speech.

I'm doing a state-side (CONUS?) job search myself for similiar areas. Wait for VanIslander's response... helped me out in more ways than one (thanks again Van... I'm actually making headway... if i could just get my p-port!).

Go to the Korean Job Board and search jeju (geogu/geoju... whatever... too many spellings of that place...unless I'm the one who's screwed up) island and other areas of interrest.
