Gang,

I'm not sure which forum this belongs...but, does anyone know of a program that I can type (like typing ALT + ### to get a symbol) sounds out phonetically...based on the international phonetic alphabet?

Thanks,

Ryst

Edit: I am aware of Miscrosoft Word's ability to render certain symbols (via "Insert -> Symbol -> pick whichever needed)..however, there are a few symbols that are lacking...such as the "sh" symbol akin to the skinny/elongated "s" or "f"-like (with no crossbar) symbol and the upside down "V"

Know how to get them?

Maybe a IPA software program with a complete set of all those diacritics?

In this day and age ling profs can't still be writing this all by hand can they?

Some fonts

http://babel.uoregon.edu/yamada/fonts/phonetic.html
http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=encore-ipa
http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/wells/fonts.htm

Just use Character Map to type out the fonts. It's installed with all Windows Operating systems usually.

The keyman program mentioned on this webpage (it links it there, too), looks like it lets you change your keyboard settings or something. Haven't tried it yet.

I forgot this one program:

http://janmulder.co.uk/Phonmap/

I actually have used it and like it. Although it takes a while to hunt and peck with the mouse. If you use it often enough, I suppose you'd get faster at it.

I wish they would come out with an IPA keyboard, though. Heck, I think everyone should be using IPA instead of their respective alphabets. It would make learning languages so much easier.

I love you. I love you. I love you.

Yes, I will be using it (I teach pron. courses every semester..which require me to phonetically transcribe LOADS of papers). I normally do it by hand, but since I am finishing up my thesis, it (the symbols) must be done by keypad.

Thank you ever so much.

A double !shoosh!
