I'm a new guy coming to Korea. Is there anything that anyone knows about Kwangyang City? It's close to Yeosu. This city's supposed to be one of the better ones in Korea, but I don't know Kwangyang.

I've worked in Korea before, yet haven't been to the Peninsula. I worked in Ulsan and Daegu. Things went well, despite all the regrets. I'm not afraid of getting taken for a ride job-wise, unless I don't get paid. Consider Korea a place to at least work uninterrupted for a year. I've worked in other parts of Asia and Korea does have the best package deal around. I wonder about coming back though.

It's like this. You know you may get a crappy apartment, a raw deal to boot. You know things aren't going to be like back home. But compared to the rest of Asia, Korea is up there with a lot of more important matters of survival. Listen, you can eat well there. Spicy food is not good for you, but I've never been healthier after living there. Kimchi reeks, but the Koreans are nonetheless hardy and strong. They eat more vegetables. I'm damn sick of the pork I have to eat in the Asian country where I'm now living. Tired of the complexities of being a foreign worker too. Korea offers simplicity. Really tired of some of the expats who give this place where I'm living some acclaim besides.

I think that's the name of the game there in Korea. There's no acclaim to it, as if this job really deserves this rebuttal of reasoning when it's rife where I'm living with redundancy. But I can't put my finger on things, of course, and say I know the answer to teaching in Asia. But it's good in Korea. So is the weather, and I'll be coming back. Hope anyone can provide me with any knowledge of Kwangyang City.

It's a boring, and very drab place in my opinion. At the weekends you could always venture up to Gwangju, or take trips around Joella Namdo.

Must admit....as far as the foreign scene goes Gwangyang is pretty boring.

I go there about once every 3 months because my best mate in korea wifes' hometown(did you get that Smile ) is there and he hates going by himself as he gets too bored.

So we go there and hit the drink so it is Ok....however wouldn't want to live there.

Unless you get the POSCO position, that place is sweet as it is closed off to the rest of the city...looks like a suburb in Australia.

Hi Rock

A lot depends on what yr interests are.

If you're a keep-fit enthusiast, it's not bad. If you're into privates, it has a very close-knit community and the word spreads, with the attendant risks.

The expat community is quite vibrant, which makes up for lack of numbers.

Personally don't want another year of it, though.

I taught last year in in Suncheon, which is about 15~20 minutes west of Kwangyang. Kwangyang is really small, but the foreigner community is really tight and they have get-togethers/etc. They also go to Suncheon, where there are more foreigners to mingle with and a little bit more (but not much more) to do;

they have a yahoogroup:

and the Sucheon yahoogroup is:
http//groups.yahoo.com/group/Sunchon_crowd/

so you can get more information about the area from the people who are there.

Hope this helps!
