|

So last night I went to get some fried chicken for take-out. In the chicken place there were these two adjosshi sitting there getting totally drunk. Naturally it was about 7:30 in the evening. So I'm sitting there waiting for the chicken this adjosshi starts yelling "hey! hey!" and I'm just trying to ignore him, hoping that he's not talking to me. But when I look over, he's sitting there all red-faced and glaring right at me.
He starts mumbling some stuff in Korean and I can't really make it out. So I say "Yeh?" And he says something like, "ܸ ҷ..." (call the ajumma). So I look over at the ajumma who's standing there like 5 feet away. And I look back at the wasted guy. And I say, " ܸ?" (that ajumma?) and he nods his head. So I yell, "ajumma" and feel kinda dumb because she is right there. But I thought maybe she was kinda deaf or something. And the ajumma and the guy start talking and I can't understand the guy, but the ajumma says something like, "̿" (it's take-out). And the drunk guy mumbles "..." (i don't know...i don't know)
Then I realize that the guy was trying to help me. He thought that I was just sitting there waiting for her to help me. He didn't realize that I had already ordered.
The point of this little story is that I'm glad I learned a little Korean. The guy, in his own dumb way, was trying to help me, but he came across as angry because he was so wasted. If I didn't know any Korean I'd be thinking, "Oh, he hates foreigners. D@MM YOU PLAYBOY!!!" |

Haha... That's totally how I thought this post was gonna end after reading the first few sentences.
Even just a little understanding of language can often be a BIG help in defusing situations that weren't bad in the first place... I was out with a Korean (completely lacking the English) buddy once, and was waiting in his car while he went to the ATM. He comes out with this HUGE drunk foreigner dude chasing after him. My buddy's kinda big as well, and often comes off as kinda gruff, so the foreigner thought he was being belligerent when my friend beckoned him over with his hand... All he was trying to do was show him to an empty ATM, but I guess it came across as "fightin' words"... Anyways, it took a while to calm 'em both down.
A lot of Koreans come across as sorta gruff or rough around the edges sometimes, even when they're not really being hostile at all. Some language understanding goes a long way in getting over this. |

Heh heh... I've finally got my digi cam now, so I'm actually starting to get recent pics. Still don't use it much, though...
Anyways, keep with the boring grammar (vocab too), but just use it with everyone... It doesn't matter if the whole conversation consists of you telling a taxi driver everything that you "ؿ"... Really. I totally remember having those kinds of conversations and still feeling some satisfaction at having been able to communicate past "Thank You"... That's the same sorta thrill I got when I went to Japan, too... Even though my Nihon-go is completely lame-ass, I still got a charge outta BSin' with my bartender in whatever Japanese I could muster. Baby steps turn into big steps pretty quickly, tho'.... |

Yeah, my Korean is pretty lame too. If you look at my post, understanding the situation required me to know a grand total of 6 words. I think most little situations in life can be solved with 6 words. But you need a good vocabulary to have the right 6 words for every occasion.
There was one time in a restaurant when I would've given an eye to know the word for soy sauce. I tried saying in Korean, "the bitter brown water which, when you eat sushi, is served with wasabi."
I was promptly served a plate of wasabi.
BTW it's . and wasabi with kimbap tastes terrible |

Police Book Man for Starting Fight over President's Eye Job
Busan Police booked on Friday a man, known only as Mr. Lee, for striking a female customer in a restaurant during an argument over President Roh Moo-hyun's "double eyelid" surgery. According to police, Lee was in a roast chicken restaurant in Yeonji-dong on Thursday afternoon when Ms. Shin, a customer who was reading a newspaper on her own at the next table, said that the president's cosmetic surgery made him look ridiculous. Taking offense, Lee said it wasn't the surgery that made him look that way, but the makeup he was wearing, igniting an argument that ended with Lee striking Shin in the face with his fist. Lee asked for forgiveness, claiming that in a state of drunkenness, he mindlessly struck the woman whom he thought was mocking the president.
