Music is in quotes because I'm talking about the companies that fashion stars from auditions and use them to make money. I heard that there were four...SM, JYP, YG, ? Is that right? I wonder how much of the industry they own. These kinds of companies are everywhere regardless of which country, but I think there's a healthy number of fake vs. real music, maybe about 50-50 of each, but I would say these companies own some 80-90% instead. Something tells me that komtengi might know. |

I believe Sidus also has a music arm... thats who GOD are with, not sure if thats a JYP collab or not. They'd be the big four but there are others out there. M-boat is the new arm of YG, which deals with rnb. JYP is 's entertainment companies name. MP is another big hip hop label (joosuc). But yeah it doesnt get any bigger than 5 or 6, but I'd say you're totally correct in that they have about 90% of the Korean market sewn up. I know a couple of people with indy labels here, and even they are talking about getting one act to develop into a k pop god or godess cause they cant make any money doing indy music. At the moment 20,000 units is a strong release for an indy release, but across the board music sales are suffering so bad because of the internet and mp3's.
I'd say the 50-50 is closer to 70-30, even some of the acts that seem "real" arent all that real |

No doubt Koreans are great singers, but is there a level of musical ability here in Korea? There just seems to be a huge lack of live music considering how Koreans love to sing. Music is canned it studios to be sung along with. |

The majors here have the industry locked down from top-to-bottom. They have the distribution, the media outlets (most importantly all those crappy "live" music programs), radio, and every other element involved with the making, distribution, and sales of "music." The only way to musical stardom here is through one of the big boys. They quite literally *make* stars here.
The recent success of Asoto Union is one exception, however, as I think they were fairly independent.

I know the drummer/lead vocal personally, and yeah they are on the MP label, but only in terms of distro. they are currently on a leave from doing any Assoto stuff, and have added a few members and become Windy City... a more reggae infleunced group. They did an ad, have had some interest in Japan... but still didn't make it as big as a band of that quality should.
The group in a similar instance that has been mosr successful would probably be Clazziquai... cant go anywhere without hearing some of their stuff.
the more I listen to Korean music, the more it makes me realise that the major thing they are missing are producers. they all just bite foreign music |
