Quote:
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake near the Pakistan-India border Saturday reduced villages to rubble, triggered landslides and flattened an apartment building. More than 3,000 people were killed in both nations, and a Pakistan army spokesman called the devastation "a national tragedy."

The toll included 250 girls who died when their school in northwestern Pakistan collapsed. Another 500 students were injured, said Ataullah Khan Wazir, police chief in the northwestern district of Mansehra.

In the capitals of Pakistan, India and
Afghanistan, buildings shook and walls swayed for about a minute, and panicked people ran from their homes and offices. Tremors continued for hours afterward. Communications throughout the region were cut.

Unfortunately, the death toll appears to be up over 18,000 now, although, as we've seen before, I'm sure it's hard to get a reliable number so soon after a catastrophe. Still, it seems like it was much more deadly than originally thought.

This caught my eye:
Quote:
India's government offered condolences and assistance to Pakistan, a longtime rival with which it has been pursuing peace efforts after fighting three wars since independence from British rule in 1947, two of them over Kashmir.

"While parts of India have also suffered from this unexpected natural disaster, we are prepared to extend any assistance with rescue and relief which you may deem appropriate," Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a message to Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

Interesting to see what, if anything, becomes of that.

There have also been devastating mudslides in central America.

These go hand in hand with uncontrolled deforestation.

The earth and its ecosystems are haemhorraging badly under the weight of 6 billion destructive humans. Something has to give.
interesting how 50 dead in london bombings is bigger news than 19000 dead in Pakistan. when that happened, there were sympathetic services held to console the british- in 3rd world countries worldwide. I don't see English people tearing themselves up over the mass death of may pakistanis. I wonder how Al-Quaeda will interpret this act of Allah?
