Are the ESL teachers in Japan brighter? Are you second-best here in Korea? I get the impression Japan has higher standards for teachers, and that many of us are just 'the last resort.'
I think many ESL teachers in Japan have a haughtiness that makes them appear so. But maybe they do have the brains we don't. All I keep thinking is 1) The Koreans outdo the Japanese in English speaking ability and 2) What does it REALLY take to teach English?
Or perhaps the Japanese are to blame for this. |

3dog,
You are right, Japan does have more demanding standards for the hiring of foreign teachers. This might lead to a work force thats on average better qualified than the one in Korea.
However, for some, Korea is just a better choice and you can raise the standard anywhere you work.
The teaching market in Japan does have I am sure its share of flaws an annoyances.
There is also the cost of living issue to be considered.
Korea's ESL market seems to be where Japan's was about 5-10 years ago as far as standards of hire are concerned. |

Althought the link I'm pointing to is not as restricted as this one, I think it gives a glimpse into the difference between the two countries and how foreigners in Japan interact with the native Japanese.
I am being redundant about providing a link to this board because I think people can learn a lot from it.

The Korea/Japan debate has been talked about a multitude of times. But its rather simplistic that 'good' teachers go to Japan and 'bad' teachers go to Korea.
Actually, I'm reading your second paragraph and now I'm a little lost how that relates to the first paragraph.. and the third paragraphs confuses me a bit more.. |

I know the cost of living is higher in Japan but isn't the average pay of Japan higher? I got an offer from Japan and an offer from Korea and I came here because I thought it would be more interesting. |

The base pay is higher, but you have to pay for your own housing while Korean schools include that with the job. Often schools have a prepackaged deal that knocks upwards of 60,000 Yen off the salary which puts you on equal to less than equal footing with your stock Korean job. All before you have the brutal cost of living that Japan offers. |

Food and clothing is pretty much on par with Korea. AND you can even find man-sized clothing there.
But, leading a social life is what'll kill you.
And taxis, NEVER take a Japanese taxi
So, why am I here? I need more money for the start up costs for Japan. |
