|
|
It looks like I've managed to get evenings off of work for my next contract, so that I can study Korean. I was hoping to get mornings off so that I could study at Sogang, but it looks like that's not going to be an option since I also want to keep my current job.
It looks like the only options available for university evening programs are Yonsei and Ewha. Can anyone who's been to either or both give me any input to help me decide which one to study at?
Thanks! |

DAMN! So this is what it feels like to be hijacked.
Can anyone out there actually help me with my original question? I've searched the board, and there's quite a bit of information about the Yonsei program (prestigious, but dry, and maybe not very helpful for learning how to communicate), but next to nothing about Ewha. |
I haven't studied at Yonsei, but I did one semester at Ewha and I had the best teacher I've ever had in my life. They use CLT, and you will walk out of the semester having a stronger command of Korean.
Based on my experience there and what I've heard from friends who have attended Sogang I would say the programs are comparable. Go with Ewha and don't even think about Yonsei. |

Communicative Language Teaching which is much better than what you will get at Yonsei which tends to be a mix of grammar translation and audiolingualism from what I've heard. |

Does anybody know if either University offers Korean lessons on the weekends? Also, is Ehwa open to males as well or is it limited to females only?
Thanks |

Ewha's Korean as a foreign language program is open to men. So far as I know, none of the university programs offers classes on weekends. However, YBM's Jongno branch does offer Saturday Korean classes, and their classes are very good. Hangeul Kongbubang, near Sookmyoung Women's University, also offers W1000/lesson Saturday Korean classes taught by very dedicated volunteers.
I know that Pagoda was offering Korean classes on Saturdays as well, but I'm not sure if they still are. |

Yes I am a Man and I took classes at Ewha. I am currently at YBM and the classes suck. It's all grammar translation and 90% teacher talk - the opposite of what a true language class should be.

560,000 is cheaper than Yonsei 3 nights a week.
Anyone want to tell me a program where I can start mid month, end mid month, only study a month and still get a really advanced class? |

I am hoping on taking the spring semester at Ehwa. I see that one of the required documents is a copy of your diploma or degree. Mine are both in Canada and I may have a bit of difficulty getting them here.
I was wondering if anyone has taken the program and if these documents are absolutely required. Will my E2 visa be proof enough that I have a degree? |

The Korean Embassy here in Washington DC offers a 2-3 month class that meets a couple times a week for like 300 bucks.
If I want to continue my Arabic, I'd have to pay 450 bucks for a quarter (ie 1/2 a semester) for a decent class.
So if you ask me, that's a pretty good price. |

I'm currently in the Yonsei evening course...and I actually like it. Yes, it focuses a lot on grammar, but in the end, if you don't know grammar you'll find you can't say what you want to. Of course, I studied linguistics and like that side of language. You will have to study a lot, though, if you want to do well in the class.
Concerning speaking, speak Korean with your Korean friends.
Of course, I didn't attend Ewha, so I don't know anything about their program. |

I've studied at the evening course at SNU and Sookmyung. I like the SNU programme because it's only twice a week. They also tend to go a lot slower and really work on getting you proficent in the target language where as sookmyung goes a lot faster.
Unless SNU adds more levels I'll be done there in june so will be shopping for somewhere second semester. Looks like E wha seems to be the winner for evening korean classes. |
