My school (high school) hired multiple new Korean English teachers last year. Maybe 90% of those got fired/quit/weren't rehired. Most all of them had experience.
I'd say most all of those were good teachers that put a lot of work into their jobs, and cared very much. The reasons they left ranged from not being rehired, to being pushed too far for the money and not coming back, and at least one guy came back, but left after a few days due to a fight with the principal (so I heard).
But now they've been replaced... all but one (and she had no experience before last year, although she's good)! And they're hired several new people they found at the last minute -- recent college graduates. They all seem very kind, but I'm getting a bit of a laugh out of the things the guy teachers are saying to me. Some of them remind me of things new foreign teachers say. Other things are downright funny:
Korean Guy #1: "I haven't attended a school with women since grade school. I really don't know how to handle it! What are they like? I'm really worried about it!" (he was serious!)
Also, "Did you know that one of our students is a model?! Oh my gosh, I'm really nervous! Do you think she is good-looking?" (one of our students is a rising star/model)
Korean Guy #2: "What do you do about girls sleeping in your class? They keep sleeping in my class! Should I hit them or something?"
Also, "I'm so scared to teach speaking all in English, so I'm not going to. Some of these girls speak better English than me. I wonder if they think I'm not qualified! I'd better speak mostly Korean."
To their credit, these two guys speak quite well, and seem nice to a fault. I hope they can grow up fast and put up with the heat! |
