Remember several threads back people were supporting censorship of racist or offensive online comments and a few posters (including myself) worried that criticizing politicians and government policies would would be considered "offensive?" Well, that happened.

Sadly this view seems to be shared by both sides of the political spectrum. |

Umm... do you see the government censoring racist comments? It seems to me that racism is at its peak and not a whole lot of censorship is going on. |

I'll have to re-read the article but I'm not clear what they are censoring other than things they just don't care for. It looks like criticizing the current administration/government is not appreciated.
Ya' know, many here say that the best thing about Korea is Thailand. Maybe this new move by the government is toward a no-criticism of the King (leadership) type policy! |

You must not follow the news much.

There was thread about this I think a couple months back. Many were for the move but I worried that the government might conveniently use this to their favor.

I guess if they deem it offensive, it should be censored. That will probably include anything pro-North Korean, pro-gay rights, and criticisms against current administration and its policies. Even though I hate North Korea with a passion, it really bothers me that Pro-NK sites are banned here. I sometimes worry a bit that my criticisms against the military might get me in trouble as well.

I don't think this sort of attitude is anything new. I think the article was pretty much spot on although I'm not sold that the left will be much more lenient. |

I guess we'll see how this unfolds over the coming years.
It is remarkable at times how Korea appears to be in the front "pack" of countries only to have something like this come up on various fronts. |

The only thing that South Korea leads the pack in is copying Japan and America.
Japan more often takes ideas and reformulates them into something intriguing and reflective of their cultural aesthetic.
In terms of censorship, since the founding of the last dynasty there's never been an extended period of time emphasizing the cultivation of individual progressive ideas.
It's always been the ruler's way or the highway, basically. |

2MB has been shackling free speech since he took office. According to some of my Korean friends, his manipulations are being compared in principle to those of Chun Do Hwan in the 80s. There is plenty of talk of having him arrested for corruption and environmental destruction after his term ends, as the groups wishing to do so are too fearful of being prosecuted by the laws 2MB has enacted.
There are also some who assert that 2MB purposefully made the KORUS FTA a better deal for the US, in order to secure a swift move to residency there in order to avoid prosecution. |

Where do you get the idea that this crackdown on on political freedom of speech is across both spectrums of politics here. Any Korean worth their salt will tell you that 2MB and his administration is in full paranoid control of the media and dissent here. Did you not see how they locked up the rebel disk jocky last year? He went and ran for the opposition. LMB'd best mate runs MBC who there had been a massive strike against for months due to, you guessed it, political interference in journalistic freedoms.
It is not a Korean problem. It is a 2MB problem. Korea will be glad to get rid of him but they deserve what they get if they elect someone from his same party after enduring his crap for the last 5 years. |

Interesting post. What's the word out there on the post LMB period then? One might assume some turmoil even if it's not dangerous.

I didn't know about the disc jockey story. I saw that story about the blogger/writer. It seemed pretty crazy to me considering what he was actually saying. |

Its not that long ago we were controlled by a military dictatorship. I see this sort of censorship as remnants of the past. I wouldn't be surprised if this sort of thing continues after Lee leaves office. I'm not convinced the left will be less authoritarian than the right. If the left does take office, I hope I'm wrong about them. I'm not crossing my fingers though. This is a country where former dictators and torturers are running around free. I guess there's some solace in that Chun and Roh aren't getting in the national cemetery. |
