The killing of any animal for food purposes is often sad.

Frankly I don't think English or any other language in the world has the words to describe how barbaric and disgusting this is. I believe in Karma and I am sure these sick sadistic people will get theirs. This should be a national embarrassment. In Canada if you call someone a pig it is a big insult. In Korea it is a dog. I can now see why...

Judging from the links to other animals above, it appears you can find cruel things happening to all animals.

If the offending part of the Korean dog industry cleaned up its act, would there still be something wrong with eating dog? Is it more wrong to kill one type of animal for food than another?

pigs are not treated any better than dogs - even in the west...

i used to be a veterinary officer for australian quarantine and inspection services. part of my jurisdiction was animal welfare in abattoirs and slaughterhouses. i saw stuff that was equal to anything in korea.

think about that next time yu eat bacon.

then pray for our animal brothers and sisters... and ourselves..

There was a big controversy in the states about the slaughtering methods of cows in the largest kosher slaughter house. Basically the cows were hung upside down alive and had their throats slit and well the rest wasn't pretty.

And then there are puppy mills in the USA that are themselves horror shows in keeping with a Korea boshintang operation.

Eating a dog raised in a humane condition and killed in a humane way is no different from eating a cow or pig raised/slaughtered the same way.

Horse is very popular in France and gained a lot more popularity after Mad Cow. I'm sure a lot of Americans would balk at that one too.

I'm not sure I want to try dog but when 44% of Americans want to strip Muslim citizens of civil rights because of the religion they practice or people want a baby so badly they murder a pregnant woman and cut the fetus out of her stomach, well, there's really more to worry about closer to home than the dietary choices of another country.

were they conscious? if so that is lousy and definitely illegal in the states.

i was involved iwth the introduction of halal slaughter to abattoirs in the northern territory of australia. it is basically the same procedure as kosher kill. usually (in non-halal slaughter) cattle are stunned with a captive bolt device powered by a compressor or by a cap. they are then hung and stuck. their heart pumps the blood from their body and they die. they are unconscious the whole time. a small percentage of animals die as a result of the stunning device. muslims and jews alike require that the animals be alive when they are bled. so a different shaped captive bolt device is used called a "mushroom stunner". this renders the animal unconscious for about 5 minutes. the slaughterman must act quickly... say the appropriate prayers and cut the neck in a special way.

if the slaughterman is not skilled it is possible for animals to regain consciousness while they are hanging and bleeding. but in a good abattoir there is a QA programme in place to eliminate this.

horse has a strong flavour and smell that i am sure does not suit the palate of most people... sentimentality aside. it is a healthy meat however and low in fat. the racing industry generates a lot of unwanted horses.... it is better they be humanely slughtered than left to die in some back paddock from worms.

i used to regularly inspect the welfare and sanitary conditions of australia's only export horse meatworks in peterborough, south australia. perhaps due to the extra sensitivity of the general public to the slaughter of horses, but also due to the nervousness of horses themselves, the facility had exemplary welfare standards. the people who worked there understood and respected horses and knew how to handle them. they worked quietly and without frightening the animals. the races were designed to calm the animal. the kill-box was specifically designed to be dark and quiet. the knocker (the man who actually killed the animals) was skilled and quiet in his work.

an australian current affairs show (anyone remeber hinch?) tried to do an expose of the shocking practices at this place... but there were none.

compare that to the average australian pig slughter operation,,,,

pigs are smart animals and easily upset. the workers who unload the pigs are brutes and use metal spikes and electric prods to goad them. the animals are frightened and in pain - which is not good for the chemistry of the meat (changes the pH and makes it more susceptible to bacterial degradation). pigs have thick skulls and large facial sinuses so they must be electrically stunned. the operators are ofetn unskilled and the pigs take a long time to die. sometimes they regain consciousness before they are bled, while they are being torched or dehaired in a boiling water bath.

it is a nightmare and no-ne cares about it. hinch tries to do a show on horse slaughter at an exemlerary establishment, but could he be interested in looking at the way bacon makes it to your plate???

That's horrendous, not just the dog farming, but the links to farming of other animals raised for meat, milk, eggs. I honestly hadn't a clue about that treatment.

Yeah many were still conscious. They did this hidden camera thing. They weren't taking care to make sure he animal was goofed up by the bolt or they were waiting too long between bolt and the neck cutting. It was made more disturbing because it was America's largest kosher meat processor and the only American vendor certified to sell beef to Israel.
