Do foreigners who live in Seoul feel superior to foreigners who live elsewhere in South Korea?
Yes.
How lame is that?

No, we don't. We feel empathy. A whole lot of empathy.
I've lived in Busan and Jinju.. but prefer Seoul. Actually the entire country seems kind of the same.. but small towns means its really hard to get out of your day-to-day existance. Being in Seoul means you can escape to a lot more cool stuff out there. |

No, because Incheon is where it all happens. We have an airport!

I wonder if a better question would be "Do foreigners living in Seoul detect a hint of jealousy when their friends from bass-ackward Korean cow towns come visit them???" |

If you were planning to answer your own question, wouldnt it have been easier to ask this to yourself in the mirror than to head for a PC Bang? |

One thing i have noticed is that people in seoul sometimes forget that there is life outside of seoul. And that what exists in seoul doesn't apply to the rest of the country. |

This is true. Having lived in a few other Korean cities.. it can be totally differnet worlds and existances. Particularly when people make comments/stereotypes of all Korean people. While they do have a lot of similarities. At the same time, the way they react to foreigners and your day-to-day existance among them in various places are vastly different. |

Korean people from the provinces ARE different than Korean's from Seoul.
I found Mok'po to be the worst city I have visited in regards to how they treated me...I and my friends were treated like a black might have been treated in the southern USA 40-50 yrs ago.
The people in the provinces are louder, more close minded, and not as exposed to as much as the people in Seoul are.
As for foreigners, I live in Seoul, but I tend not to meet many foreigners, save the few I say "hi" to at Costco or Walmart...so not sure what this is all about? Troll bait thread? |

If this was about the locals - then yeah, there's Seoul superiority. Expats - when I was there I would say no. Though I'm coming back, I am bypassing Seoul. I have little ability to gage the current expats living in Seoul.
Locals - sure. It's like NY or LA in the US, or how many born-and-bred Tokyoites on how they view places outside of their burgh: they think their sheet don't stink.
Cheers,
Joe |

It's a mental thing that happens to people who are not apart of a "bigger thing." Whether that "thing" is better or not depends on your internal feelings.
You feel some sense of inferiority towards those from Seoul because of what life there "might" offer -- you put them on a pedistal. You then begin to believe that other teachers from Seoul are looking down at you from that pedistal, and it makes you feel uncomfortable, because part of you knows that the argument is false -- they are not "better" than you. Dwelling on this inner conflict makes you a little disgusted or even angry if you think too much.
This is exactly what happens to some non-Americans when they think about America and Americans. And it's why many people hate America so much.
Stop believing the lie and making yourself angry for stupid reasons. |
