What is this "letter of reference, notarized" that the Korean consulate in LA wants me to show? I don't remember this from when I applied for and recieved an E-2 in 2003 Confused . Someone said it might be the 'blue letter', but I don't know what that is...letter of visa issuance?

My question is this...is my new employer supposed to send me these things or do I have to get a traditional letter of reference from a former employer?

The letter in question may be the causal product of the particular embassy employee's personal, er, um, inclinations towards her/his role at the embassy: Twenty bucks says she/he wants you to provide a Letter of Reference from an employer in your home country.

I have been asked for a reference from a former employer from back home by two overseas Korean Consulates.

...but the website states that an E-2 applicant needs a "letter of reference, notarized"...

I guess I'm just gonna bring a notarized letter from a former employer and hope that will do...of course, it will have been notarized in Ecuador...does that matter?

Anybody else have info?

That's strange. The consulate in Seattle asks for no such thing. Did you call them to try to clarify?

I just got my degree notarized from the consulate in LA. Don't worry about it.

I called and talked to someone, which was an enourmous hastle (you're closed? But it says you're open till 5? You're on the phone with me now?). Basicaly, send them your original diploma, sealed official transcripts, your passport, a check for two bucks per copy required, and something from fed ex (or your courier) that is basicaly prepaid freight. The people at fed ex knew what to do when I told them what I was trying to do. You will want to set up an account, and put your account number on a packing slip the K consulate will use. The freight will then be charged to your card.

Also, I sent them a letter with my contact info, told them what I wanted done with everything, and itemized everything that I sent to them. Just try to make everything really clear for them.

Even with prepaid overnight express shipping it took over a week for the process to occur. Good luck!

John

NOTE: I see you are reapplying for an E-2. This would be my first time, so things may be different for you.

This is something that your school needs to get you. basically it's a letter that says who you are, that you are a good person etc. and it has to be signed by a lawyer. It's part of the paperwork needed to get a letter from immigration saying tht you can get a visa.
