|
|
Hello all,
I'm moving to Daejeon around the end of next week. I've looked through their city web site, and it looks like a fabulous city. I'm just curious if anyone else that lives there could tell me what you think about the city. Is there any night life? Are there a lot of parks or recreational type facilities? Is the shopping attractive? Will meeting other English speakers be a rarity? Is there a general hang-out spot for foreigners? How long does it take by subway to get to Seoul or Busan?
And any other information you have about Daejeon would be highly appreciated.
Cheers,

I'm in Daejeon and I love it! (see my location for verification)
I've lived in Jeonju, Gunsan, Seoul and now Daejeon, and I think that Daejeon combines the best qualities of the other three.
Someone else can answer you about night life, as I haven't been out much (almost not at all) -- I'm married and have a dog, and well -- I'm a homebody for the most part!
As for parks -- well they are the main attraction for me. There are several small rivers that wind their way through the city, and these have walking paths and open fields next to them. There are several other parks as well, including an in-line skating park.
I'm confused by your question about taking the subway to Seoul or Busan.... there is an express train, but no subway! It takes less than 2 hours to go to Seoul (1 hour 30 min?? I'm not sure) by Express train.
As far as meeting other English speakers -- well I think it happens if you try. I've heard that there are quite a few foreign English teachers in the city and a lot of them go out on the weekends.
Where exactly is the job located? |

I live in Daejeon. Daejeon is good. There is a night life in Daejeon. If you like nightclubs, there are Xenja, KK, and News nightclubs and others I cannot think of. University students generally hang around Gung Dong or EunHeng Dong through the night. Shopping is sufficient, but obviously Seoul would have much more than Daejeon in terms of shopping. You will meet others who speak English in Daejeon. There are a few common hang out spots for foreigners, SantaClaus in Gung Dong and J-Rock in DaeHeung Dong are 2 I can think of.
However, Daejeon is still building their subway system, and the construction keeps going on and going on.
Enjoy Daejeon |

Oh that sounds great! My schedule is from 2-9, so I'm hoping to be able to enjoy a few mornings at the park.

I wasn't sure if it was above or below ground rails. Thanks for the info!

It's at a school called Korea Herald School. I'm not sure where it's located; have you heard of it?
Thanks for the help!

Thanks diablo3. What exactly is SantaClaus and J-Rock? Are they night clubs? |

Santa Claus (underneath the Gung Dong Lotteria) makes the best burger I've had in Korea. And they serve western brekkie all day. And they let you program your own music. |

I actually been to SantaClaus only once, but I go to Gung Dong every week. The food and service in Gung Dong is cheap. If you are coming down, you will have no problem settling in Daejeon. Also, if you need help, many will come to your attention. |

SantaClaus is more like a coffee shop than a bar, IMHO. Did any of you ever go to the Handyman? I liked that little place but I am not sure if it is still open? Last I heard they had closed it.
I like Daejeon. I don't want to move to Seoul, although it might be inevitable. Daejeon is more relaxed and the pace is slower - just like home!
I believe the Korea Herald School is in Dunsan.. but I have no clue where exactly... |

Yes, that IS right. But I think I was figuring in the time it takes to get to the train station in Daejeon from where I live. Thanks for the clarification. |

Tuesday? That's the best day of the week for me for the rest of March. If I wait much longer, your baby will be away at school by the time we meet ! |
