Aren't we all? How heavy does it weigh on your mind? Are you prepared, and preparing for the days and years ahead?
I have no idea where mine is going. It's a little strange that sometimes I don't much care. I guess I sometimes like just floating through life. But I know youth will pass and age will demand more stability. I feel woefully unprepared as yet.
Seems a bit like these years abroad are up in smoke. Nothing substantial to show, just some strange memories. Drifting. Romantic notion but not practical. Then again I have to express an aversion towards a conventional life. If security were tops on the list why would I be here like this, this long? probably not.
The future's uncertain but it isn't well to be a fool for too long.
What's your thoughts about yr future? |

Sure, sometimes. It is a nice problem to have though because in a way it implies that you have options. If your only option was to spend your life working in the local steel mill or something like that, you might not be wondering about this stuff. To be certain, this sort of life can be frightening and lonely (I find that making life-desicions can be pretty scary), and those sorts of experiences might encourage a bit of self-reliance. But what are you going to do later in life -- look back and wish you had gotten into your stale routine years earlier?
Try to enjoy it as much as you can while you can! |

lately i've been a little concerned about my future. mostly because i'll be through (maybe) with korea in about 5 months and i don't really know where i'm going from there. i want to eventually settle in my native country, so i gotta start thinking of how i'm going to do that....only a lousy english BA...ouch. i've been starting to make a few preparations, like looking into college/univ courses and requirements and i've been trying to educate myself on some software programs.......
i don't know. i think it's healthy to have at least a vague "plan" in mind for the future. |

You all are in much better shape then me at 30, you are still young and have a lot more options left.
That said, those of us in the ESL teaching business have a lot more life options than most people back in the "real world."
I have a vague plan to save up some money and finally get my masters. But I dont worry overly about it. I am happy and enjoying life and that's what is important to me. |

I'm not concerned at all. So far everything in my life worked out great, without me having to do much effort |

I was working at the AAFES new car sales in Uijongbu for the last several months. Sales have been very sluggish and money was VERY tight, although I was making some money tutoring (since I had a SOFA visa, I'm not afraid to say what I was doing). But since a third of the Second Infantry Division will be deployed to Iraq and then back stateside, the people in Seoul deicided to close shops on several bases starting next month (including my office) and I was given the pink slip. I have tried to find another DoD job, but the hiring process was stopped until the relocation starting next year.
The point is, no job is considered stable.
After about 8 years here, I'm about to bounce over to China, I got a public school position over there that starts in September. Its not bad, 17 hours a week, 8 months a year (with 4 months PAID vacation, in which I got a temp job that pays $1400US a month)
I am hopfully banking that China might be alittle more stable than the situation here. |

i have a vague plan...I'm not worried, nothing is weighing on my mind. Too many people are too worried about the future and forget to live in the present, in the moment.
If you're like this, you're not going to be any happier in time to come, no matter what you do or where you are. |

Speak of the devil, here was a great editorial in the Times today about a guy going through just this same confusion about his future. It really connected with how I am feeling too.
Let me see if I can find a link. If not, pick up a copy.
Found it:

Can the guy in the article speak korean? It says he got a masters from Yonsei but I'm guessing the lectures weren't in korean. IF you can't speak the language of the country you are living in is it really surprising the job opportunities are limited.
If he can speak korean then he has valid points and I sympathise with him. |

I beg to differ... my parents spent alot of time when they were in their late 20's and 30's protecting the future... investing in things... a house... a family. And now they'll be retiring at 52 instead of 65 and gaining 13 years to do whatever they want and they have more than enough money to do whatever they want. Plus they have the satisfaction of having raised a good family.
That's what I want from my future. I want to have a good family and provide for them the best that I can and that's why I'm not taking off to some random country for vacation... I'm saving my money so when something important comes along, like family, I'll be financially secure.
I don't think there's any greater joy in the world than being surrounded by a happy and secure family...
Disclaimer: Yes, I realize families can be happy without having alot of money... but I do want to buy a house, not live in an apartment. I want to send my kids some day to college. And some smart planning now makes that alot easier. That's what my parents provided for me and I want to provide the best life that I can for my children. |
