jesus.. for some ISLANDS!!! where do these people draw the LINE!!!!
SEOUL (Reuters) - Two Koreans used weed clippers and a knife to lop off fingers on Monday outside the Japanese embassy in Seoul to protest at Tokyo's claims on a group of desolate islands that South Korea (news - web sites) insists is its territory.
Park Kyung-ja, a 67-year-old woman, and Cho Seung-kyu, 40, each chopped off a finger during a rally at the embassy gates.
The long-simmering dispute over the islands, called Tokto in Korea and Takeshima in Japan, flared as Tokyo and Seoul were celebrating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
Park and Cho struggled with police in riot gear guarding the embassy as they severed their digits. Police said the pair were then rushed away for medical treatment.
The two were part of a group of 16 people that burned Japanese flags and shouted slogans accusing Japan of acting as Korea's colonial overlord. Japan ruled the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.
"Japan must stop the attempt to invade Tokto," demanded Hong Jung-shik, who leads an anti-Japan organization based in Seoul.
Japanese Ambassador Toshiyuki Takano was in Tokyo on Monday to discuss the sudden deterioration of bilateral ties.
The dispute dates back 60 years to the end of World war two, when a defeated Japan withdrew from the peninsula. The volcanic islands, uninhabited except for a South Korean garrison, sit astride rich fishing grounds.
South Korean government officials have said that the territorial dispute could harm the neighbors' warming ties.
"No country in the world conducts quiet diplomacy when it comes to territorial rights," ruling Uri Party member Kim Won-wung said on South Korea's KBS radio.
The dispute over the rocky outcrops in the Sea of Japan, which South Korea refers to as the East Sea, flared in late February when Takano restated Tokyo's position that the islands were "historically and legally" part of Japan.
The islands lie midway between Japan and South Korea, about 220 km (140 miles) from the eastern Korean port of Samchok and the same distance from Matsue in western Japan.

| Going to war is one thing. There might be some glory in it. Or at least some raping, pillaging, looting and burning! But intentional body mutilation? I just don't know. |

It's a gang ritual in Japan.
Koreans can be pretty nutty. After the president was impeached, there was some guy who tried to ram the national assembly building with his burning car. |

Uh, they probably don't, not now.
I respect people who put action where others only talk. It matters that much to them. It's been proven. Whether it should matter that much is a judgement you can make if you want. |

It's basically a border dispute, isn't it? Let's say American politicians started saying that the US extends about a mile into what is now considered to be part of Canada, and started flying American planes over the disputed area. I think you'd find Canadians getting pretty worked up about that. |

The Japs stand to gain extra fishing grounds and any possible mineral rights from the extension of territory...
Koreans claim historical rights....Japan claims historical rights...

Worthless? You really don't understand its importance?
With it comes territorial rights over a huge area of the sea for fishing and military use.
Plus its symbolic importance, which you ignore. I still don't understand why the Brits decided to go to war to take away the Falkland Islands again, unless one considers what it represented. |

| Thousands of British people live on the Falkland Islands. Can't really compare it to Dokdo. |

I will give credit to the Koreans. They never do anything half-*ssed. It is 180 miles an hour or nothing. Extreme is the best way to describe them I think.
I think Dokto or Takashima should become an independent nation. If the two countries can't play nice, no one should get the islands. |

Exactly. If I remember my international law class:
A country has rights to all minerals and fishing out to 200 miles off its coast. International waters starts 12 miles out, but another country cannot harvest at 13 miles, hence the 200 mile rule.
If two countries hold each side of a bay, then they divide it in half. |

Everyone seems to be missing the main point of the article.
What happened to the fingers that were chopped off? Where did they end up?
Are they still sitting outside the Japanese embassy?
Or, did they get sewn back on to owners hands?
Just curious> |
