I need to move from my place near Yonsei U. (Yonhee-Dong) to a place near Seoul National U. of Education, Yeoksam, Gangnam, Seollung, or Samsung stations.

I live in what is about a 10 foot by 10 foot room that is in what seems like a bording house. It is called Sun Vila. My room has a corner stall with its own toilet and and shower but no sink. Very small but functional. There is a single-sized mattress on the floor. The rooms are moderately old, definitely not new. Conditions are okay but not swanky by any means.

Ther is a small fridge and a shared kitchen for the two floors of the place but no meals are provided. The walls are paper thin but there is no curfew or supervision. I pay about 370,000 a month but that includes electricity and ALL utilities.

Is this a Hasuk, Gosiwon, livingtel? I would like to get the same kind of thing in the area I am looking to move too but so far my Korean friend that is looking on the websites is having troubles. She's not too sure what "class" of place this is. And looking in the Gosiwon sections she has trouble finding many places with private shower/toilet. But I'd really like to have them plus the space for my 2 metre x 1 metre computer tavle/desk like I have now. I'm willing to pay up to 450,000 and go a few startions away from my target area: yeoksam as long as I live NEAR a subway station.

So far no luck. Any advice on what kind of place I have or where to look would be great.

Sounds horrible. You want to get the same kind of room again?

Why don't you think about Itaewon?

Rents are much cheaper yet it's a central location. Also landlords there are not so insistant on huge key-money deposits.

Actually, I'm rather fond of these places for some odd reason. Mostly money. Been in this place 4 months and kinda got used to it. I was working a long hours contract and I didnt need a social life etc.. I value location over space any day of the week. And less room is less to clean - I'm lazy. Anyways I have a new contract near Yeoksam and I want to move fast and easy. After a few months of accumulating funds and settling in, if I think this job is going to last and my agency gets me other jobs in the same area (actually have a decent agency and everything I do is VISA legal) then I will probably move to a "real" apt. (probably further out though as they are pricey in this area).

Thanks a bunch M. I will get my Korean friend to look into this right away. Youy are awesome. It is hard finding a place not knowing the language and not wanting to impose too much on my Korean contacts. Thanks again.

I work right beside Yeoksam station at 7 am and then 11:30 am each for one hour. To make this really work well I want as small a commute as I can. Itaewon is a bit far when you factor in subway changes and walking to the station etc.. I find.

Sounds more like a goshiwan than a hasuk. depending on the area you could probably get a hasuk for the same price with 2 meals a day. For that though you probably wouldn't have your own bathroom. If you want a hasuk with your own shower & toilet your probably looking at 450-500k per month. That said I haven't had experience with places near SNU, but I assume prices are similar.

I'd take the 2 meals a day over my own tiny bathroom because I love good korean ajumma food and hate cooking and buying groceries (eating out all the time gets old too)

I could pay up to 500k if it is right. Looking for a near perfect fit, not perfect for right now and can always keep looking in that first month and upgrade. But gotta get there fast.

Livingtel also seems like a good fit. Seems I'm maybe between "luxury" Gosiwon (oxymoron if there ever was one) and economy livingtel if I am getting any grasp on these terms.

This place is right by Seocho station. Not sure if the rooms with private bathrooms are available or not...

The term 'Villa' to describe a living space has been thoroughly corrupted here. In the West, we tend to think of a villa as a Spanish-inspired, lofty whitewashed home, preferably with an ocean view. Here it defines a self-contained, no-bedroom apartment, often with decaying plumbing, deteriorating wiring, and alien life-forms growing on the walls.

Lies. I have a large living room with a couch and two armchairs, computer, glass coffee table, larger table, bookcase, some good art and a dope ass place to practice my headspins. My view faces the south slope of Namsan which is where I usually go to hang out. A small kitchen with a stove, full-size fridge and brand new insect-free countertops. A large master bedroom with a queen size bed and three oak armoires and air conditioner. A spare second bedroom which I use for laundry and so on. A small, I admit, bathroom that is slated for repair soon and a a large wrap-around laundry verandah that I also use for storage. Is it a villa? Yeah. Do I like it? Yes, I do.
