Just wondering how much notice youre legally expected to give for breaking a contract. Have worked 8 months...

It is probably stipulated in your contact. Mine states it can be broken by either party with 1 month notice, assuming I've worked at least 3 months of it.

But.

Breaking a contract is only half the battle. The other half is getting the Letter of Release. You need the letter to transfer your visa or get a new one. Although stories vary, generally you cannot get a new E2 without a letter. Without a letter, you have to sit out Korea until your 1 year is up. Then you can apply again. There are probably steps that can force the school to give you the letter but unless you got a fluent Korean friend to work the labor board thing, you would find that a hard route.

So, assuming you want to be able to find new work, you have to approach the situation with a certain diplomatic sense. Don't burn bridges.

by labour law standards 30 days notice should be given

There is no law on the books, but 30 days is the norm according to the folks at EFL law.

I know this is not the answer you want, but is it possible to stick out the next 4 months?

If you want to be nice give a months notice. If you need to leave then tell them after you have been paid.
