Hi all, I'm looking into volunteering as a teacher in India (Kolkata) and wondering if any of you have done it there, elsewhere, or had a friend do it. I've been looking at www.culturalextremes.com and i-to-i.com, heard anything? I'ts about 1700USD once you get there, for 4 weeks CELTA training and 12 weeks volunteer teaching after, living costs included....thoughts on India as a whole? Lemme hear it!!! Thanks!!!

if you want to donate your money, give to a charity
if you want to donate your time, volunteer
paying to volunteer is giving money, but not to charity.
i'd suggest keeping the two distinct: there are PLENTY of volunteer opportunities which don't try to get your money (often more desired than your time) by charging large amounts for the privilege of helping the less fortunate.
if you want to volunteer (and save your cash to donate to actual charities and charity cases) then check out the over 10,000 volunteer opportunities at www.idealist.com or pay a relatively small administration fee (still supporting bureaucracy more than helping, but the rates aren't in the thousands) then check out the many workcamps at www.vfp.org |
