This morning my co-teacher told me that the VP wants me to teach remedial classes during winter vacation. I did the same thing in summer, and only about four kids showed up so essentially I viewed it as a complete waste of time. Anyway, the thing is, I'm supposed to be teaching these classes alone and aside from obviously not wanting to do it, I'm annoyed that the VP is expecting me to do it at all when she has made it clear that I'm not a "teacher" but an "assistant." Earlier in the year, for Teacher's Day the school took all the teachers out one weekday afternoon to a park to play volleyball, followed by dinner and noraebang. When my co-teacher asked the VP whether I would be attending, the VP said no, as I am only an assistant.

I know that in our contract it says that our role is to "assist" the Korean English teachers. So can I use this to get out of teaching these classes? I just think it's stupid that they view me as an "assistant" when it suits them, but when it's convenient I'm suddenly qualified to take classes on my own.

What are you expected duties besides the remedial classes during the camp-vacation?

12 hours of first- and second-grade classes. Which isn't a lot, I know, but I've been told to expect to spend the first three full weeks of January at camp, so I have between December 22 and 31 (excluding Christmas, and one weekend, so seven weekdays) plus one last week of January (five week days) to fit in my leave on top of these classes.

Wow. You must feel really satisfied with yourself after making that incredibly useful contribution. Well done.

how many days of vacation do you get a year? it sounds like you will be able to use your standard 10 during winter break.

It looks like they had to 'make up' some classes to get the number up to 22 that the NETs are expected to do during the winter vac.

If you are not returning then tell them what you think.

Personally, teaching a class of four was much more fun than a class of 40.

I've never co-taught a camp. It's no big deal. Word finds bogglesworld, Andrew Finch, Side by Side, Interchange, EFL Classroom 2.0

If I felt I wasn't being respected, ie being told I'm only an assistant as cause for not being invited to school trips, I think I'd be pissed enough to insist on a Korean co-teacher at all times. After all, it's illegal for an assistant teacher to teach alone...

What go around come around kid, tell them you're an assistant and if you can't eat with the other teachers you can't teach by yourself. Is it petty? Perhaps. But it sets a precedent for them to remember when want to pull this petit tyrant crap in the future .

Tell me how they can force you to teach? No one can use you unless YOU let them. You best be a stand up person and tell the VP to stick it and remind the VP of what was said..."you're an assistant!"
If you bend over and teach these classes.....it won't stop....because they will know that you won't stand up to them.
