Hi,
Where would I find food stores selling Chinese foodstuffs, Filipino foodstuffs, Indian, Vietnamese, Malay foodstuffs? Especially in the area between and including Seoul, Daejeon and Taegu - I'm not likely to get to Pusan often.... Not that I don't love Korean food the best, but it's a big world.....
And while we're at it, let's include Mideastern and Mexican food items..... |

Hanam Supermarket in Seoul caters to foriegn diplomats so it's a good place to start from.
Chinese- you'd probably do okay in any reasonable sized grocery store.
Filipino- I remember seeing a market catering to Filipinos on Sundays in Daehangno ( Seoul)
Indian- there are some international food shops in Itaewon. My favorite is the one half way up the hill before you turn to go to the Mosque.
They carry a lot of Southeast Asian type ingredients too.
MiddleEastern- try the shops near the Mosque in Itaewon
Mexican- Bwhahahahaha!
Sorry, hard to believe I held it together that long. . . Korea is not the place to go for any kind of international culinary adventure . Outside of Itaewon, you'll be pretty challenged to find ingredients I fear. |

There is also a Filipino store in Itaewon.. and a Filipino newspaper available (a fairly small one - but has all the info for stuff like that).
I've never been to the Itaewon Filipino store, but know Filipinos who go there on weekends. |

There are a couple of small stores stocking some Chinese and South-East Asian products in Pyeongtaek (Gyeonggi).
They have red/green/Penang curry pastes, coconut milk powder (3 types, catering to the nationalities that buy them!), canned coconut milk, fish sauce, lentils, chickpeas, kecap manis, sweet chilli sauce... and lots of other things I can't think of right now..
Pyeongtaek has a lot of Indonesian workers so that's probably why the stores are doing well and have decent selection of stuff, including a million cards for phoning home.
If anyone's interested in going there, PM me for instructions - the two stores are about 5-10min walk from the train station, not far at all. |
