Yep....too many variables. Post back when you have found one you are considering, along with the price. We can do much better from that point.

I know E-mart had a sale these past few weeks, not sure if it's still good though. It's a TG Averatec or something like that. It's got a Semperon 2600+, 256 RAM, DVD/CD-RW, Intel Extreme graphics, sound onboard, and wireless 802.11b or g, don't remember which. All for about 1.000.000. That's a decent price for a decent machine. Plus it's new.

For a second hand, cut the price of the new by about 25% per year it has aged, and that's a good price.

What multiple programs do you want to run? Internet and Winamp? Doom 3 and Word? DVD and torrents? That will affect what you need.

20-30GB HDD? that's cool. If you just want to watch DVDs, burn CDs, and download stuff, you'll probably need at least a Celeron 2.0, P3 1.5, or a comparable AMD chip. RAM? 256 minimum. Look in the local classified papers.

Until you are able to give us a bit better a picture of what you want, we're not going to be able to give you much advice.

Buy an old machine. Make sure it has say, 32MB of video RAM (not shared) for DVD playback (preferably ATI), 256MB of system RAM (multitasking....get 512 if you can. Remember, you can buy more RAM for your machine) and get an external USB DVD/CD burner.

You want an old machine with one fairly new piece of tech...the DVD burner. Older notebooks won't have this feature, so buy old (fairly) and get an external.

Really, you will have to scope out some systems and then post the model numbers here. Then we can help.

Thanking us imparts some responsibility on us. I have no idea (nor does Google) what an "Averatac 2600" is, making it tough to accept the responsibility.

The last time I saw "2600" in a name was when "Atari" preceded it... Wink
